Updates breaking network connection & sound

    I'm running Windows 10 Home, version 1803, build 17134523.

The last 2 updates, KB4023057 and KB4100347, have both resulted in my having no network connection and no sound on my laptop after these updates have been installed on restart. I am able to repair both by running the Windows diagnostics.

Has anyone else had this issue? I'm glad it's an easy fix, but it's a little inconvenient, and it's a bit of a white knuckle thing as I sit and hope the repair works, and then breathe a sigh of relief when it does.

I'm also running HitmanPro Alert, in which I have disabled some features because my laptop was having episodes of bogging down. The troubleshooting there is going to take some time, but so far I think the features I have disabled have dealt with the problems there.

While I have not seen this error your white knuckle comment caught my attention.

I would download and use a tool like Macrium Reflect.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

One of these days your white knuckles are going to get whacked. A reliable restore is essential.

What kind of network adapter and sound adapter do you have?

The wireless is Broadcom, the ethernet and sound are Realtek.

I suspect I might need driver updates for these. (I don't like updating drivers, had a bad experience with an incompatible sound driver many years ago. Fortunately, I was able to roll back to a previous driver.)

I would head to you laptop makers site and get the drivers there. You should be able to lad them and have it work. Check details of existing driver before installing so you know change has taken place.

Feature updates will overwrite and you will have to reset. Keep the drivers in a safe place.

To block driver updates, except when it does a feature update, Option 4 this tutorial.

Thank you. My laptop is by HP, and it has an "assistant" that checks for updates. Hopefully it would steer me towards drivers that are compatible with what is installed. I don't know if computer and laptop manufacturers still make modifications to parts such that drivers from the parts manufacturer's website would end up not working. That's how I got burned many years ago. I think it was an HP computer then, too.

Anyway, thank you for your response. I had been wondering if this was an issue with these Windows updates in particular, but it looks like it isn't a widespread thing.

My laptop hasn't been inclined to look for 1809 yet. I'm not going to rush the process!

I like you stay away from driver updates until they are required. HP or Windows driven. I would still disable Window updates.

Thank you, I'll take a look at that tutorial. Very helpful. I wish Windows Update had made it easier to disable that without having to modify the registry.

    I'll mark the thread solved.

    Thanks again!

I find the registry mod the most effective.

Manually right click start, click run, click Hardware Tab, click Device Installation Settings, click No.

    Just backup your drivers.
