so I have the same error code like everybody else, but perhaps a little bit different. I upgraded to w10 home version from 8.1 on my dell laptop, if I recall correctly it was activated. I upgraded to w10 pro on my home pc, then used that generic product key to upgrade the laptop, it went from home to pro version and downloaded the additional features without problem, now it's been almost 24hrs now and it's still not activated.

if I do a clean install, say windows 7 pro, then use the tool to upgrade to w10 pro, would my windows 10 pro be activated?

How did you upgrade from W10 home to pro?

I just changed the product key, the generic key from w10 pro, all went well downloading the pro features, but then it wouldn't activate.

That won't work because (I assume) you were using Windows 8.1 Home, and you were eligible to update to Windows 10 Home.
Changing the product key to the generic key of Windows 10 Pro won't work, as you didn't upgrade from Windows 7/8.1 Pro.

Here's my situation on trying to activate Windows 10 on a VM.

First of all, in order to even get the upgrade I had to modify the Registry entry that stores the comparability of my OS to even get the upgrade. Seems the graphics adapter was the limiting factor on my VM. I copied over the Reg entries from my 8.1 production machine which itself upgraded and activated flawlessly. Using this reg entry from my 8.1 system enabled my VM to get the W10 upgrade. Here's the Reg key if interested: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\UpgradeExperienceIndicators\Reduced]

So now I am at the point where Windows 10 needs to be activated. I upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro x64 using a valid key I had from Technet. I made sure the key I used for 8.1 on my VM was not my production one. The default key on W10 is the Insiders key VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T. Does everyone get that?

Occasionally when I activate I do get an error message that my key is not valid. Most of the time it says to try and activate later. I thought activation now relies on your hardware and not a key.

I tried the various 'tricks' in the thread to no avail so far. Knowing my situation can anyone make some suggestions to get Windows 10 to activate?

Do you get an error code? If you get the code that we got, it means that the server is still problematic.

i upgraded one of my father's Win7 boxes & got an error that key is blocked. It's not pirated, so I'm not sure what's going on. I upgraded using the media creation tool (but didn't create ISO, upgraded directly). I've tried the slmgr.vbs about a hundred times with no luck. Is this something MS is working on? His other Win7 box activated no problem.

    Okay.
That's a server-related problem, and there are some solutions for that. I solved that by constatly clicking (or mashing, we can say) "Activate" button AFTER clicking it for the first time.

EDIT: You can find the other solutions in this topic.
