Meaning of the "Defer upgrades" option

    Hi

In the "Advanced options" of "Windows Update" there is the "Defer upgrades" option. If I select, what happens?

    Thanks

    Bye

    Hello Balubeto,

Here's what is says Defer Upgrade is for in group policy that would be the same. :)

If you enable this policy setting, in Pro and Enterprise SKUs you can defer upgrades till the next upgrade period (at least a few months).

If you do not have it set you will receive upgrades once they are available that will be installed as part of your update policies.

Security updates will not be impacted by this policy.

I think I read something about this new policy that Windows 10 users below the Enterprise level will no long be able to refuse updates, but rather only defer them for a short period of time. Are you sure that policy actually applies to both the Pro and Enterprise users also? I also remember reading that those two Windows Editions would be exempt for that tyranny being imposes on the little guy by Microsoft, especially since these are the users that are their test pool of users to ensure that the bugs are worked out for the Enterprise users before they are Upgraded.

    Hello MKeezy,

Yep, you can set the policy on both Pro and Enterprise editions.

You might also see if this below may help. :)

    Here's a good explanation.

What Does "Defer Upgrades" in Windows 10 Mean?

Your Windows 10 system may have a "Defer upgrades" option for Windows Update. This option delays feature upgrades for several months while allowing security updates through.

Enabling this option puts your Windows 10 PC on the "Current branch for business." Its intended for business users who want to wait a bit longer before getting new features on their PCs.

Microsoft explains the "Defer upgrades" option in this way:
"Some Windows 10 editions let you defer upgrades to your PC. When you defer upgrades, new Windows features wont be downloaded or installed for several months. Deferring upgrades doesnt affect security updates. Note that deferring upgrades will prevent you from getting the latest Windows features as soon as theyre available."
That provides some idea of whats going on, but isnt very specific.

Which Windows 10 Editions Can Defer Upgrades?
The Professional, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 10 all have the "Defer upgrades" option. Windows 10 Home - the standard version of Windows 10 youll get on most new PCs - does not have this option. If you do really want this option, however, you can pay $99 to upgrade your Windows 10 Home PC to a Windows 10 Professional PC.

Note that the Professional edition of Windows 10 doesnt actually use this option by default - youll still have to enable it yourself.

    Which Upgrades Are Deferred?
Windows 10 is updated in a different way from previous versions of Windows. Both Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Professional will automatically install the latest security updates - theres no option to disable Windows Update.

Microsoft will also be releasing feature updates for Windows 10 rather than holding back new features for the next version of WIndows. When these are released, theyll first be tested by people who have signed up to test new builds of Windows as "Windows Insiders." After theyre tested, theyll be made available on Windows Update, where theyll be automatically downloaded by Windows 10 in the same way security updates are.

Some businesses dont want new features to suddenly appear on their PCs before theyve been able to be tested, so clicking "Defer upgrades" will delay only feature upgrades. Youll still get security updates automatically.

How Long Can Feature Upgrades Be Delayed?
Feature upgrades can only be delayed several months. Its unclear exactly how many months these upgrades will be deferred for. But it is clear that you cant defer these upgrades indefinitely.

After several months, Windows Update will automatically download the new feature update and install it. Microsoft will also stop producing security updates that can be installed on that old "build" of Windows, requiring you to install the feature update to keep getting security updates.
    Source

In other sources I've read that features updates/upgrades are scheduled on a four (4) month cycle, so any deferral would be less than that. The CBB branch adds another four (4) months to the cycle so essentially you can defer feature updates for up to eight (8) months. I haven't read anything from MS on this though - they're keeping some information close to the chest in the event that things change in the coming months.

The Current Branch for Business (CBB) - ala enabling the Defer Upgrade option will definitely extend the feature update deferral - it's just the length that hasn't been clearly described.

The non-distinct update and upgrade terms add to much of the confusion.

I thought I read somewhere that Pro version would defer for so many months but that Enterprise could defer indefinitely?

I seriously hope your wrong... because that means Im stuck with Windows 7 and was really looking forward to Windows 10. Problem I have is my GTX 570 doesn't run well with latest driver and will only run on an older version... if Windows 10 is going to update it and not allow me to defer it for good... at some point my system will be useless with a non functioning graphics card and I ain't got the cash to update the card.
