    Windows Updates for windows 10

    Hi there

I wonder if there is anyone who can clarify how windows updates will work on windows 10

I am currently running Windows 7 Premium so I suspect the upgrade will be a a Windows 10 version of similar standing.

What worries me slightly is that I have heard that only Windows 10 Pro users will have the ability to customise updates, now I can ask windows update to inform me of updates only, but I can choose if I want to download and install them, or even IF i want to install them. Will this also be an option on the version of Windows 10 I get as a free upgrade? Or will we simply have no choice about updates.

For now, while it's still Insiders preview, choices for WU are limited, Later on is anybody's guess but there are strong indications that at least security updates are going to be on auto and mandatory.

Home edition users will automatically get updates, there are currently no settings that allow the end user to change this.

Pro edition users can DELAY updates, but not decline updates

Enterprise edition has it's own set of rules so that businesses can plan implementing updates without affecting 100s / 1000s of users or mission critical operations

Here's a wiki article that offers a workaraound (the whole wiki thread is a good read):

You can inhibit updates & other background data usage by setting your limited data plan network as "Metered" and then connect to an unlimited network when there are updates or other big downloads to be done. This applies to all Windows 10 Editions not just Pro.

Each non-LAN network {including WiFi networks & phone hotspots} can have a "Metered connection" property set on it. Metered networks do not allow updates to be downloaded. Windows updates will be withheld until you connect to a network that you have not identified as Metered.

You cannot set LAN networks as Metered. As I have not seen a description of a satellite connection I cannot tell how that will behave but the existing MS guidance, such as it is, only mentioned LAN connections as not being used as Metered so I think it must all depend on how the system recognizes your sat network.
    .....
I'm sure someone will find other workarounds, so keep an eye on
