Can i turn on windows upate without getting windows 10 ?

Hello people i'm not sure this is this best place to ask as i assume you are all fans of windows 10 , but please forgive me because i don't know where else to ask .

I don't want windows 10 and about a year ago following many headaches caused by win10 prompts on my win7 laptop i found the answer was to uninstall a certain update and then turn off updates permanently .

Unfortunately my laptop died and so i have bought a used win7 one to replace it .

The trouble is this laptop has obviously been wiped clean and had a brand new copy of win 7 pro installed . As is everything works fine but i can't help feeling i should run updates at least once but i'm scared to do so .

So my question is can i run updates without falling foul of windows 10 ?

Some folks have been able to do it but I experienced doing updates on a Win7 computer but got called away for a few hours and when I returned the Upgrade to Win10 was in progress, proved not to be a problem so I've stayed with it. The Free Upgrade to Win10 ended July 29 so I doubt it will be offered. I just did a factory restore of Win8.1 on a Notebook and when checking for updates [Windows Update] it showed Win10 as a choice but when clicking the link it gave a message that the offer had expired.

Exactly. The free upgrade to Win 10 expired last July so MS won't try to force Win 10 on you any longer.

Since you are running Win 7, you may want to post future questions in a sister forum: http://www.sevenforums.com/

I installed Windows 7 on a friend's laptop and on a second hard drive in my own computer over two months ago . Both are fully updated now and neither one has exhibited the slightest hint of upgrading to Windows 10.

I had to start Windows Update on Windows 7 with this:
WSUS Offline Update - Update Microsoft Windows and Office without an Internet connection

Once I installed all the updates available from that program, Microsoft Windows Update then started finding and installing updates the way it should.

Is that WSUS offline update tool smart enough to grab cumulative/rollup update patches instead of downloading the whole lot of individual updates? From the description it looks primary like an updater for security related patches.

The recent big rollup updates I'm aware for Win7 is the July2016 Kb3172605 update which has a prerequisite of KB3020369 and I think it includes the recent MS fixes for the slow update problem.

    Edit--------------
I made a mistake - its the convenience rollup KB3125574 (prerequisite KB3020369) which brings WinSP1 mostly to April 16. It doesn't contain security patches for explorer. There are a few monthly rollups like the ones for July, Aug, Sept which aren't cummulative. After Oct, the monthly rollups are cummulative, but probably won't include everything since SP1 for quite some time.

AFAIK your laptop shouldn't do any stealth updates to 10 or popup messages to upgrade anymore since the free upgrade offer has expired. But if you use MS assistive technology you might still get the messages and can upgrade for free.
