MS has already indicated that it is going to "preload" stuff on machines for Win10 install later. So, my guess is, to prevent a horrendous load on their servers at the end of July, when the date does come, all these "preloaded" machines will be able install Win10 -- from the stuff already loaded on the machines.

That way, they won't have to contend with hundred of millions of folks trying to download Win10 the same day.
And we won't have to contend with servers bogging down or hiccupping:). A good plan for everyone.

Reserve the copy on each of your machines
Between now and 29th July win 10 will be slowly downloaded to each machine
On the 29th you will get a prompt to install it on each machine

you are already licensed on all machines so it will use current license and upgrade it

That's my understanding and what I have done
so we just use our win 7 or 8 serial number for any clean installs?

If we assume that everything Microsoft has told is true and valid, then:

    1. Each user (email) registered to Windows Insider program will get a license and can upgrade the Windows 10 Preview to Windows 10 RT;
    2. Each computer running Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 will get a free Windows 10 license during the first year after the official release of Windows 10

Therefore, if you have let's say 5 computers running a valid and licensed Windows 7 or 8, each of these computers can be upgraded to Windows 10 with a valid Windows 10 license. In addition, let's say you also have three computers running Windows 10 Preview, all of those installed using a different MS Account which all are signed in to Windows Insider program, all of these three computers would also be able to upgrade to the final Windows 10 and get valid licenses.

I would be very surprised if it wasn't like this. Microsoft has made it quite clear that during the first year almost everyone will get a free license. I expect all my computers, real and virtual ones alike, to get a valid and free Windows 10 license.

win8 will have to be updated to 8.1 before it will be upgraded to win10 ,and win7 will have to be running SP1,I read that on a windows site but cant find the link to it

Huh?, I have 4 computers running 4 valid copies of windows (three with win 8.1 and one with win 7), I have received the icon offering free win10 on all four computers.

All it has asked so far is to provide my email and a copy has been reserved, the question still is, do I need to go to each of my four machines and individually provide my email and reservation 4 different times, one for each computer?

Is another part of the license/upgrade process coming or is microsoft cross referencing win OS serial numbers to each of my different computers, not sure how one download for four different computers (licenses) is going to work?

Not trying to be difficult but not sure how this is going to work.

    thanks
    TC

MS offers a free upgrade per license (of existing OS) not per email address. So you have to make reservations for each machine. But really? You want to have 4 windows 10? I would at least leave the 7 alone. Just a suggestion. :)

I thought I read a while back that these updates could be shared (cant remember where now unfortunately)

So computer A would download the update direct from MS
Computer B would start doing a download, but notice computer A has already done it, so just grabs the files from that machine
    etc

    I don't think I imagined this
    Yup, that is correct...

    Hi Kari,
Did Microsoft actually say anywhere that Insiders would get a free licence? I'd be interested to know if there was anything 'official' posted on the web somewhere?

Thanks Kari, but later in that same conversation is

So yes you can upgrade from Preview to RTM, but it suggests you need a 7 or 8 licence.

    From http://www.neowin.net/news/nearly-4-...-free-upgrade:
    Windows 10 for Insiders

Microsoft will give a free upgrade path to the final release of the OS to those who beta tested Windows 10 through the Insider program.
This only means you will be able to upgrade to the final RTM (Release to Manufacturing) code without the need of a clean install, but it doesn't get you a free copy of Windows 10. Microsoft has not confirmed, but has vaguely hinted, you will be able to validate current Windows 7/8 licenses to get a genuine Windows 10 license when coming from the Insider Previews.

Yes I was wondering if there was anything more that 'vague hints' out there.
I suspect it will do no harm to clean-install and activate 10 Preview for folks that have computers they can do that on. I have some backups to do first though!
