Win10 ver 1607 will not install on laptop

    Current: Win10 ver 1511 build 10586.589
Acer laptop Intel Pentium P6100 2GHz, 4GB ram

About a month ago I tried to update to ver 1607, but it restarted to a black screen with the dots going around in circles. I left it running for 48 hours before I forced a shut-down. after restarting it three times it went back to ver 1511.
Since then update has downloaded and installed endlessly with the message "cannot complete update" after restart. I have tried Update Troubleshooter and it states it fixed issues. I have tried Update Assistant without success as well as Media Creation Tool. The only option I get with MCT is to do a complete install wiping out everything. The other options are grayed out.
I chatted with Microsoft and they wanted me to pay $200.00 USD for a year of support or $100.00 USD for a single instance. I declined.
Can anyone offer me a way around this problem, or a way to prevent update from downloading and installing ver 1607?
I have read hundreds of posts about Anniversary update problems but none have helped me thus far.

    p.s. I have also received error codes of : 0x8007652 and 0x8024a10a.

    Thanks

Wow, only 9 results from Google on that error (of which the majority is useless)

... but have you tried the two options mentioned here...

    Solved - Error 0x80070002 - 0x20009 Windows 8.1 update

the 2nd is new to me but interesting.

(PS I know it's not exactly the same error - but the result seems to be the same)

I'm not sure how to relate Win 8.1 solutions to Win 10 but I am gong to try the clean boot method and see what happens. the majority of info I found was by doing a Google search on differently worded win10 update issues.

I tried a clean boot and still no luck.

For the second part of your question...

...you can use the 'show or hide updates' tool from Microsoft.

Thanks Bree, I was able to stop update from trying to install 1607. Just as curious to me is that Microsoft finally sent the update to 1607 to my desktop running Win10 Pro. It also ended by stating "could not complete the update". I tried using Windows Creation Tool and had complete success with the only option being "keep all files and apps". It is weird that the laptop only shows "clean install" as an option.

I found that there are different versions of the Media Creation Tool and that was the reason I couldn't get "Keep files and apps" on the first try. Version 10.0.10240.16480 was the problem. Version 10.0.14393.0 allowed that option. Unfortunately it still hung at black screen after update restart. New message received: error 0x19991001-0x40017 installation failed during second_boot phase... I will leave it at blocking the update and consider the matter solved.
