    Can't install KB3189866 (Cumulative Update, Win 10, Version 1607)

    Howdy,

I have been trying to download and install Cumulative Update, Win 10, Version 1607 for x64-based systems (KB3189866) since Sept. 15 but so far I am coming up empty. I realize the help forums have been loaded with folks having the same problem but I decided to start my own thread instead of joining in ones already started in case it is a result of what kind of computer I am using and the Programs I am running on it.

First of all, I am running on an All-In-One HP Pavilion 23-g017c (x64) AMD A6-5200 APU w/Radeon HD Graphics, running Windows 10, Version 1607, Build 14393.105, using the Edge Browser while utilizing Windows Firewall and Windows Defender as my major security programs.

I have tried daily to install the update via Windows Update but it does not install for one reason or the other. Some of the threads I have visited the last few days suggest to manually download and install it from the Windows Update Catalog. I tried this manual install both yesterday and today and came up empty both times.

I have never had any major problems with Windows 10 when it comes to receiving updates so this has me dead in my tracks.

So, basically I have three questions:

    (1) Any ideas of anything I can do to get this update on my computer? or

    (2) If people like me are having trouble with a particular update will Microsoft eventually come out with a fix? and/or

    (3) Does Microsoft have a link for people with update problems like the one I am experiencing?

I will appreciate any and all responses, especially if they help get this update installed ...lol Right now with not being able to get this monster Cumulative Update installed I feel like I am missing some real important information and security help.

    Thanks and regards,

There's a number missing from the KB, usually is 7 digits. As far as I know I'm on the latest, 14393.187, haven't checked last few days.

Good eyes Berton. The KB number should have read: KB3189866. I have updated my original post.

This particular update has been a problem for many (myself included), with windows update stalling at (variously) 45%, 48% and 95%. As you can imagine, there are numerous thread on this subject, but the main (27 page) one is here...
    Cumulative Update KB3189866 Windows 10 build 14393.187

The various fixes that have been found to work start appearing from about page 10 on. For me it was a simple one. After stalling at 95% for 15 hours I did a full shutdown and restart. After that it took a further 10 minutes or so to complete.

    Hi Bree,

The farthest I got on the install for the normal Windows Update was 10% and the Manual installs from the Catalog finished but a message appeared saying the install was a 'failure'.

I will check out the link you furnished and see if there are any ideas I can try.

I still would like to know if Microsoft will eventually fix whatever the problem is with this particular update? Or, am I just out on a limb with a malfunctioning Windows 10?

    Thanks and regards,

It's not clear (and MS aren't saying) why this particular update is problematic. But it's not the first time. Oddly, the next month's Cumulative Update (which contains all previous fixes) seems to go a lot smoother. So it appears MS do know how to fix these problems when the occur, but they'll never own up as to why they the occurred.

    Hi Bree,

I appreciate your feedback. I guess I will just lay low and wait for a fix.
