A Clean Install from the ISO media will always work - because this wipes your boot drive and treats it like a brand new drive. But this also means you have to completely re-install all your software and re-do all your applications settings. In my case I'd rather wait for/hope for some fix to the upgrade process.

I don't mean to be negative, but I - like apparently quite a few other people - have given up on trying to install the Anniversary Update. I've gone so far as to disable the Windows Update service, because I don't want the update to try to automatically install itself.

Different people have had different kinds of problems with the update. It seems that it is virtually impossible to determine what the cause of a particular problem is - in my case I ended up with either an unbootable system or a revert to my previous/current build. This happened many times. I got lots of advice from some pretty knowledgeable people here - but none of it helped. My posting on the Microsoft Answers site yielded no useful help either. So I'm just waiting for some other/better/newer update/solution.
I understand and I've experienced the same thing.
