the first build in the AU locked stuff up, the second one just made things even more locked by adding the 1st locked taskbar thing to the apps in the second.

edit 1: uhm.. first update i gotten in a long time. was the "functionality" update, which made the taskbar programs\apps locked, so i couldnt start them, the second update fixed that, but, it made apps like photos, edge, calculator and store locked so i couldnt open them.

The outcome will be in the event log as here: - we need to know if it succeeded or not.
Otherwise you can get the result as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

(I'll change the text of that for clarity looking at it again).

Can't understand that post other than things aren't running properly..

    - but above it says it's ok.

Ok, so you need to decide.
    You could
    - try the in-place upgrade repair, or
-roll back if you like, if you have Windows.old still present. (Should have as you've done the anniversary upgrade).
The you can try upgrading again.

Now, I think that if you do the first you may not be able to do the second, 'cos Windows.old etc will be overwritten

I'll leave the choice to you.

Hi I assume you've deleted the Windows.old, which is there to allow you to roll back should things go wrong.

In position, lacking disk images (which everyone should use), I would have tried a roll back. (Which would use Windows.old).

So, you need to repair your Windows, and we know your disk is good.

An In-place upgrade repair install will fix many things, but not those where the settings are not changed by the procedure.

For this you need an installation medium with the same base build as you have installed.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums

This will refresh Windows, after the manner of a Windows installation.
    - all/most associations will be unchanged
    - all your programs will be left installed
    - you will lose any custom fonts
    - you will lose any customised system icons
    - you may need to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection
    - you will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build you have used for the repair install
    - Windows.old will be created
    - system restore will be turned off- you should turn it on again and I recommend you manually schedule a daily restore point.
    - you will need to redo any language downloads including the display language if you changed that)
    - inactive title bar colouring (if used) will be reset to default
    - if Qttabbar is installed, you need to re-enable it in explorer (Options, check Qttabbar)
This is one of the better features of Win10: as each major build comes out, that's your updated reference build, and as updates are mostly cumulative, there will be few to do.

    Recommendation:
Before you perform this major repair procedure, do create a disk image.

Please consider using disk imaging regularly. It's a brilliant way to
    - preserve your system (and your sanity)
    - back up your data
    - restore your system to a previously working state in a relatively short time

Recommended: Macrium Reflect (free/commercial) + boot disk/device + large enough external storage medium.

what should i backup before i do this?

was aiming towards doing a : Refresh your PC Fixes software problems by reinstalling the OS while preserving the user data, user accounts, and important settings. All other preinstalled customizations are restored to their factory state. In Windows 10, this feature no longer preserves user-acquired Windows apps.

which is more in my alley.

An in-place upgrade install keeps almost everything. I've used it several times.

Refresh your PC will lose your desktop programs and settings. That's fine, if you're happy with that and think that's more appropriate. Read the description carefully.

I'll leave it with you. Good luck!

    It's your PC, your choice.
