Windows Update Issue on a VL system

    I have been offered the Build 1511[November Update] of Windows 10 Pro. My activation is KMS based, not MAK. I tried contacting Microsoft support[twice] and was told that the upgrade was possible but they didn't delve into any details. the upgrade seems possible[it started downloading when I gave it the go] but I'm not sure whether it'll remain activated later. I was surprised to see the Get Windows App but thought that it won't really do anything. But to my surprise, the upgrade was build and ready.

    It's Windows 8.1 Enterprise that can't be upgraded via Windows Update. Windows 8.1 Pro can. The upgrade just won't activate automatically if the Windows 8.1 had a VL.

    I think people might be confusing Windows Enterprise with Windows Pro activated with a volume license.

    Also, don't confuse "not eligible for free upgrade" with "not upgradable via Windows Update".

    VL installations are not supposed to qualify for the free upgrade, however, neither GWX nor Genuine ticket is sophisticated enough to differentiate between key types (all it uses is activation status, hardware id and the Windows edition being upgraded) - thus OEM, Retail, VL can each get digital entitlement, the latter erroneously, ofc.

    That does clear up things a bit. Presumably, my copy of Windows will be upgraded but it won't be activated. Makes sense NOT to upgrade then. Though it would have been better if Microsoft prevented the upgrade from showing up at all on VL copy of Windows. Why trick users into installing something that can't be activated?
