Windows Update Issue on a VL system

I am currently running Windows 8.1 Pro VL[activated using the KMS mechanism used in organizations]. After updating my PC, the Get Windows 10 App came and Windows Update is also ready for downloading Win 10. How can it upgrade/download 10 when Volume License editions of Windows are not eligible for the upgrade in the first place?Windows Update Issue on a VL system-we.png

You need to talk with your organization's (owner of the volume license) IT department. Volume licensed Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 can only be upgraded through Volume Licensing Service Center and need the organization to subscribe to Software Assurance.

That is the problem, I don't have any issue with upgrading or anything. But, VL editions can't be upgraded in the normal way, why then am I getting the Windows Update notification to upgrade? Shouldn't Windows realize that my edition isn't eligible for an upgrade automatically?

Is your Windows VLK activation a hack or have you got it from your employer / school?

From school. They provide valid activations for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 currently.

In that case your only upgrade possibilities are either talk with the school IT department about if and when they upgrade to Windows 10, or buy a Windows 8.1 license / product key and activate using it, then upgrade.

No, you didn't understand. I don't care about upgrading to Windows 10. I just want to know why Windows Update is showing Windows 10 Pro as available on a PC that has a unsupported copy of Windows[VL]. It isn't about the upgrade at all. I contacted with Microsoft Support Representatives but they weren't any help either[In fact they gave inverse advice than yours].

OK, I think I got you now. My apologies for misreading you earlier.

As far as I know, a VLK activated Windows 8.1 Pro cannot be upgraded to Windows 10. However, I am starting to suspect I am wrong; it's almost impossible to find information about this, all information I am able to find is only about Enterprise edition.

The fact that you have been offered the upgrade might indicate that an upgrade is possible.

Interesting topic, I need to try to find out more information.

Yeah - this area seems to be unclear - I have seen several cases where people upgraded from 7/8 to 10240 with a vlk, and later upgraded to 150586 and it fails to activate. In all cases, it seems to be when people are using vlks on a domestic pc ie not a corporate network.

I am wondering if these are hacked to fool OS that vlk is legit but when you upgrade to 10586, the hack gets lost?

If it upgrades, but stays in KMS mode, activation will fail right? I also noticed there is a generic VL-MAK key for Windows 10? Maybe the OP's PC is using a MAK key, not KMS?
