There is another post about the 10049 update contains all the language versions and that is what is causing the slow/long update.

Mine failed the first time, after 6 hours. The second time was successful but it took about the same time. On an i5 3550 CPU with 16GB of RAM and a 500 GB partition on a hard drive. The only application software I have installed is Sonar Platinum (my recording studio program) for testing.
This might be the MS link you're speaking of. Problems with disk space and installation time in builds 10041 and - Microsoft Community

Too completely different PC's, hardware wise for me. My ASUS laptop is AMD A-10 and the Dell is Intel Core 2 Duo. The laptop has an SSD and the Dell a spinner. Laptop is wireless network and the Dell is wired. The laptop was 5 + hours after the download was finished. The Dell never did finish the upgrade. It might have if I had waited another day, hard to say. It looked unresponsive so I rebooted it. I'm just doing a clean install of 10041 on it now.
Alpha, just wondering. Since Win 10 is using generic key and drivers after installation, isn't it faster if you just clone the one from laptop instead of doing 2 separate upgrades? I haven't done it myself by I am just wondering if it will work. But I read a post here recently that one member did it that way and it worked for him.
Well, it doesn't solve the upgrade issue but just a workaround. :)

I'm done with trying to install it on the Dell. I'm trying to clean install 10041. I got to where you enter your live ID to log in. Enter it all in, click next, then it asks me to Create an accounton this PC? WTF? I type in Kerry and my password and it tells me "Please type in a different user name". I didn't have this issue the first time around. Windows 7 is going back on it for now. I've run out of patience with Windows 10.

I accidentally found a way around that issue of "enter a different user name". At that screen, stop! Leave it there and go to account settings. Under app and web site accounts, REMOVE the MS account. Immediately reboot. It has no where else to go, so it starts up under the local account you had!

Or is it possible that those having a slow upgrade process are the ones who also have big GBs of data that the upgrade process is trying to back up first (online) before replacing the old OS with a new one?

Personally, all my data goes to separate drive because I keep switching OSes on my PC and I want my data to be accessible on any of those OSes I chose to boot up with. And my 10041 clean install to 10049 upgrade took only over an hour.
Me too, Robot. Although it was a bit more than an hour for me, I also keep everything on a separate external drive.

Kari hit the nail on the head previously:
When the upgrade files have downloaded, copy the install.esd file to a safe drive, abort the upgrade and make an iso from the install.esd file, perform a clean install, done!

Hmmm, I missed that one. Although I have created an ISO from Install.esd, I haven't used it yet. Guess it's time to see how long it will take to clean install.

I just finished a clean install. From Restart to new Desktop: 13 min 11 sec.

Edwin, I tried to do that, but I guess I missed the point in the process where I should abort the update. When, exactly, does this occur? Got a screenshot or anything?

Can't remember, I didn't do it either. There would be different scenarios though.
May Kari will come along soon and advise. :)
