fbl impressive code 10049 windows update

I did a clean install of 10041 on a Dell Inspiron 530. Took less than an hour. Started the online upgrade to 10049 at 5 PM, its now 10 PM and its at 23%. Not impressed at all.

Well that was a fail. I let it run all night, it's showing 30 % Setting up a few more things. I think its locked up/frozen.

EDIT: Did a forced shut down > Attempting to recover installation > Restoring your previous version of Windows....

I have a dumb theory... 10049 is the first build with Spartan ( alleged IE replacement). For years and years and years, the two factions at MS, OS group and IE group, have been intertwined and somewhat joined-at-the-hip. Doing upgrade path instead of clean install will require them (MS) to somehow get Spartan in there without messing up IE. I think, IMO, that may be the root cause of the horrendously slow process. They're not only trying to preserve user apps and settings, but their own as well. That's a lot of juggling! Clean install doesn't care, it's a virgin IE and Spartan install, no settings from IE to preserve, and obviously no Spartan. HHmmmmhhhhh......

I don't know, all I can say is the two online upgrades I've done so far have taken a ridiculously long time. 6+ hours is way to long, and that's not counting the download time. That was fast for me, I have a fast internet connection. How many people want to site there all day waiting for this to finish?

Or is it possible that those having a slow upgrade process are the ones who also have big GBs of data that the upgrade process is trying to back up first (online) before replacing the old OS with a new one?



Personally, all my data goes to separate drive because I keep switching OSes on my PC and I want my data to be accessible on any of those OSes I chose to boot up with. And my 10041 clean install to 10049 upgrade took only over an hour.

I've noticed that at the dreaded 30% mark, the NIC is disabled, no network connection at all. Router's up cause I'm on my laptop, but no Ethernet to LAN. Can't be doing any online backup at that point. Just kinda weird it started acting this way (SSSLLLOOOWWW) in 10049 upgrade, not before. It is nice to know, although, that "others" have had a pristine experience all the way through from 9841 to present. Maybe it's the time zone difference.....

Too completely different PC's, hardware wise for me. My ASUS laptop is AMD A-10 and the Dell is Intel Core 2 Duo. The laptop has an SSD and the Dell a spinner. Laptop is wireless network and the Dell is wired. The laptop was 5 + hours after the download was finished. The Dell never did finish the upgrade. It might have if I had waited another day, hard to say. It looked unresponsive so I rebooted it. I'm just doing a clean install of 10041 on it now.
