In addition you can tell by looking in the registry. If you upgraded there will be a key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Upgrade if your system has been upgraded. If it is clean install it will not exist. Note that upgrading from 10240 to 10586 counts also as an upgrade.

There are some pictures describing it in more detail in the 2. Edit Registry section of this tutorial Users Folder - Move Location in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

thanks, what is meant by upgrading from 10240 to 10586 ? does this mean through windows update ? if so then if it has been updated to the current build and this registry key has been created, then it is no lomger possible to tell...

it is still an upgrade if done through Windows update, yes.

Found a better place to check upgrade history...

Within the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup key are subkeys Source OS (Updated on mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss) for every build you have ever installed. For example here I clean installed my first build (9600) on 3rd October 2014 and have upgraded 9 times since.

Perhaps not useful but interesting :)
