How to get away from Auto Updates from Win10

So I just got Windows 10 and did a clean install (no upgrade). Now I am going through some of the settings I want turned on and off, but the whole Windows auto update thing is a bit confusing.

On Windows 7 I have "Check for updates but let me choose.......", but I don't see that in Windows 10. From what I read, I think I should do this

a) Just turn off updates
b) get that program GWM or something like that (Update: Sorry I meant Windows Update MiniTool)

Is this the proper way or is there another way to do this. I even read of a registry hack, but not sure. I definitely just want to control what updates are offered to my system and then I get to pick and choose which ones to install.

You cannot avoid them in Windows 10 which is an issue that has caused some frustration amongst users. You also need to be wary of Windows Update pushing driver updates through automatically. Whilst it is a good feature I think driver updates should be optional. I don't want to switch the whole feature off (which can be done for driver updates) but at the same time I don't want them auto installing for all device types (GPU drivers for example).

Thanks for the reply Scottyboy99. I hear you on the two criteria. Updates I manage currently; which ones I install and which ones I do not need. If there is really no way to "manage" these then this could be a problem area.

But drivers this is another thing and your right. I manage drivers and I do check very regularly so if W10 does this I need to turn it off if possible. GPU drivers seem to have issues lately so definitely need to control that along with other items like wireless adapters. In my case the latest wireless adapter driver offered for me is a lot slower than the older one.

I need to set my system up as best as possible to head these issues off as best as possible. Is there somewhere in this forum about setting up your system to take control of your W10 system as best as possible? I was reading around and I do not see it, but then again I could have missed it.

Only thing you could do is turn off Windows Driver update, if you want too. Cannot turn off Windows update. Here is a tutorial on how to turn off Device Driver update from Windows 10.

Click on Updates & Security
Click on Advanced options
In the first drop-down menu, select notify to schedule restart.

At least then you'll be prompted.

You will be notified by a low pitched ding. If you miss it, and your computer hibernates, about 10 minutes after you waken it the next morning, you will get another ding, and a big last chance message. If your computer screen is sleeping, you'll never see this message, it just reboots anyway. So if you are not paying attention, Microsoft gets even with you for not paying attention!

Windows 10 doesn't like to be ignored. If you ignore Windows 10, you'll be constantly losing work. I've had the notification setting set, and I've had 14 unexpected reboots anyway.

It would be nice if they could change that white notification icon to Orange if there is a pending reboot. Then I'd know I need to take action. My notification icon always seems to be white. Usually with an advertisement for Office 365, or advertisements that recently started pouring in on my MSN account. Even checking for updates each day doesn't work. It usually goes into an infinite loop if there is more than one updated pending.

You should be able to disable the windows update service from services. I could be wrong. I am sort of new to 10 as I have been using linux a lot
