    Windows 10 update to 1511, 10586 freezes

Windows 10 update to 1511, 10586 freezes at "Preparing to install updates 32%".
When this happened I did a search and followed the following:
    ran
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop bits
Restarted and tried deleting all in c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution but some wouldn't, so..
Restarted, stopped the above processes and successfully deleted all under c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
    Reran the update.
"Checking for updates" took 10 minutes and then it stopped with "There were some problems ...."
Clicked Retry and off it went for about 35 minutes until freezing on "Preparing to install updates 32%" once again.
I left it for another hour but no change to 32% (in fact its still there now).
Ive been running Windows 10 since August without an serious problems.
    Basically - help please.

Seems to me you were using Windows Update to install Win 10 10586.
If yes, suggest that you try one of the following links and give it a try...............

    Media Creation Tool :
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

    Tech Bench :
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/techbench

My suggestions : assuming you are trying to update Win 10 10586 from an "older" Win 10 version.
    1. Download the ISO from the link > save it to your computer.
Then RIGHT click at the ISO file > click Mount > click Setup.exe > installation will begin.
No product key is required. Activation is automatic.
    2. Burn the iso to a bootable media (DVD or USB) > set your Boot Order to CD/DVD or USB, depending on which media you will be using > insert the media > restart computer > system will start booting from your media and begin installation. If ask for product key, click the SKIP option and continue. Activation will be automatic

Thanks for your help - but it would seem that is was my impatience.
Whilst checking on the links you gave I noticed that the 32% had moved on slightly.
This is the timing for those interested:
After the Retry following "There were some problems ...." it took just over 2 hours to install (to the "A restart has been scheduled").
I think at this point it said allow 20 to 30 minutes.
It then actually took another 2 hours 20 mins to complete.

    My details are:
    Acer Aspire 5733 2.40 GHz
    8GB memory + SD
    64 bit

Sorry to hear your unpleasant encounter. I, being an impatient guy, do appreciate your frustration.

One thing I'd like to know.............
You said " It then actually took another 2 hours 20 mins to complete."
Does that mean installation actually completed ?

    Yes installation complete.
The whole process took about 4 1/2 hours. That's from when I started again. I think the "Preparing to install updates 32%" froze for at least 45 minutes, maybe longer.
Would be nice to know if this was normal or that I have a problem.
Plus some refinement of the progress bar and %.
Also I then had some tidying up to do, like Desktop was showing hidden files (desktop.ini), Cortana back on the task bar etc.
A friend asked me yesterday, should she upgrade to Windows 10 yet. I'm afraid my answer was "wait" as she would be totally lost, even with my help.
All that said, I do like Windows 10 and the concepts behind it, though I find the assumption that the internet is always available a personal problem as I spend quite a few days each month at locations without it. So OneDrive etc offers little.
However, thanks again for your response - whatever did we do without forums?

If it is of any consolation, I always need at least 3+ hours to install Win 10 and I live in a city, not in some remote area.

I think, use the GWX SDS installer from Microsoft, https://download.microsoft.com/downl...__________.exe
