    PC won't install this update

Hi. My PC (Win10 2H2) shows that there is an update to be downloaded and installed: KB5031224 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework. It downloads and installs (apparently), but when it has finished, on reboot I get a screen saying "We couldn't complete the updates. Undoing changes..". I ran the Update troubleshooter, which said some changes had been made to my PC. But no change insofar as being able to install this update is concerned. I've given it four attempts now. The error code given is 0x800f0922. Googling that han't helped me to get the update installed (most lead you to the 'solution' of purchasing some third-party software or other! Yeah, right...). Windows Defender doesn't come up with any threats,

Any ideas as to what might be preventing my PC from successfully installing this update (all the others in the list of available updates installed OK)?

    Thanks.

    Try resetting Windows Update...
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10 <--- tutorial

You can also try repairing any corrupted System files... open a command prompt as Admin and run these commands, one at a time...

    sfc /scannow

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If that doesn't do it... the In-Place upgrade surely will...

An In-Place Upgrade "compares" what is installed on the computer, with the Windows ISO image.
Then, it overwrites any corrupted Windows files, with clean copies from the ISO image.
This is how it "repairs" Windows while allowing you to keep your programs and personal files.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade <---- tutorial

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper Standard
Making a backup is optional, but always a smart move.
If you had a backup from before this problem occurred, you wouldn't be reading this.
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect for Home Use
Free Backup Software for Windows | AOMEI Backupper Standard (free)

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.
The ISO must be created in the same language as you are using in Windows, to be able to keep your Programs and Files.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations.
Your drivers, programs and data will be intact.

    A possibly more specific option:

    For interest:
Error code 0x800f0922 in Windows 10 and 11 indicates that there’s a problem updating or upgrading your Windows system. There is no single reason for this — the error message may indicate corrupt installation files, inaccessible Windows servers, insufficient disk space....

Thanks both. Not sure what this means in practice..
run these commands, one at a time...
    sfc /scannow
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    How, 'one at a time'?
Based on my certain knowledge that 'if anything can go wrong with my PC, it will', I would not risk running the 'in-place upgrade'. I would be sure to end up with a PC (it's dual boot, Win10/Win11) which will no longer boot. :-(

My CBS log does not contain the word 'error'.

Since the KB is an update to NET 3.5, does the problem show that there is an issue with the NET 3.5 installation. Would a reinstall of NET 3.5 help?

Run the SFC command. Wait till it finishes. You'll see a progress bar, and SFC will report, when it's done
SFC stands for System File Checker.

After SFC finishes and reports... run the DISM command. It too will report when finished.

Posted many times on tenforums- feel free to search.

    I always post these thus:

a: From an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    - result on GUI, scans only - if it passes

    b. similarly run
    sfc /scannow

    c. If it passes then similarly run...

I can understand your concern about the in-place upgrade repair install, so please try the more specific option in my previous post.

Would a reinstall of NET 3.5 help?
    See my previous post!

The scans all ran with no problems detected, so I moved to fixing NET3.5.

I entered the command lodctr /R, as per the link you gave. The result was the message "Unable to rebuild performance counter setting from system backup store , error code is 2"

So, reading further, I removed NET3.5 via the Windows Control Panel, and rebooted, I was then prompted to install NET3.5, and I clicked on 'Install'. which completed successfully. Rebooted again...

Then tried redownloading and installing the 'rogue' update KB5031224: it is no longer in the list of updates however - only KB5031356 comes up Win10 update), which I installed. After the PC rebooted,. I got exactly the same "We couldn't complete the updates. Undoing changes.." message!!

I have no idea what is going on now - this update is not for NET3.5. The problem is that when I reboot, the PC tried to install these pending updates, and then spends several minutes undoing the install. I need to remove the updates and live without them (how, if they are not actually installed?).

    Thanks again.

There could be a discrepancy at play because NET Framework is pretty broad. The computer reboots to end apps that are in use that could conflict with the update.

    - Yes try to reinstall Net framework but go for 4.8.1
    - You can also try to install the update in safemode but make sure you make a restore point first in normal mode.
    - Just keep trying sometimes updates keep failing especially NET Framework ones because of the scope of NET

The error code you got is a generic one that is not mush use to determine the issue. Microsoft is good at these error codes because most of the time they are catch all codes that don't tell you anything definitive.

Posts crossed.. please read the one above

EDIT: I just noticed, looking at update history, that although the NET3.5 update came up in the list this morning, the history said it successfully installed yesterday, before I had tried any of the scans or fixes. I'm even more confused now (though that expalins why the update was no longer in the pending list today).

Still leaves me with the question why the XP10 cumulative update now refuses to install. Sigh!

Well install 1356 because its a servicing stack update which is an update to windows update and then try the NET update and it should work, and install 4.8.1 NET.

I cannot think off the top of my head what causes this, i had this happen earlier in the year i just left it and over a few weeks it finally adhere'd the updates when i tried.

The main thing to focus would be 1356 update atm and try to get that one to stick and then update the other ones after that.
