    Windows 10 licence question


    I have an authorized HP windows 10 pc , getting ready to upgrade to a larger hard drive. Do i need another license or just grandfather over??

    i've done a few full disc drive formats and installed new systems and have never had to enter the product key again, i think its kept in the BIOS or somewhere like that but to find it type in the command below, or copy and paste, into command prompt run as administrator and your done.

    Start >>> Windows System >>> Command Prompt >>> right click and run as Administrator.

    wmic path softwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey

    There is either a product key stored in BIOS (if Windows 10/11 installed at the factory for the computer), or there is a digital license stored at Microsoft for that computer (specifically the motherboard) and that edition of Windows 10/11 (Home, Pro, etc.). Either way, no additional license or product key is required to upgrade the hard drive and re-install Windows.

    Upgrading to a larger hard drive is one of the severall allowed hardware changes.

    It does not invalidate the current Windows 10 digital license (stored on Microsoft's activation servers).

    You'll be fine.
