One thing I did notice is that if you have Scheduled Optimisation off (which I do), it is turned backed on again after the version update.

Yes, every feature update has turned that back on, not just 2004. The only exception to the rule was the minor update from 1903 to 1909 which was installed by a small enablement package, turning on dormant features already in 1903. The next feature update (20H2, 2009) is also expected to be done by an enablement package.

There are other things that get reset to their default after any major feature update. These are the changes I check for:

    • scheduled defrag turned on for all drives.
    • default image viewer reset to Photos
    • Password Protected Sharing turned back on
    • details pane in File Explorer turned off
    • file copy progress box reset to 'fewer details'

Not sure what the importance is of having optimization on or off is. I had it on prior to FU v.2004 and it was on afterwards, but it still never runs, even if it is set for daily. Even if you manually run the optimization on each drive, they will show as never run the next day for each drive. Hopefully, MS will find a way make it run automatically some day.

That is actually a known glitch in v2004, which I thought they had fixed. Obviously not.
Current opinion is that if you have an SSD drive, turn it OFF.

    I'll add to that list:
    • Autoplay Settings are back to defaults: "Choose a setting"
    • System Restore is turned OFF for C Drive
    • Metered Connection is OFF
    • The Stereo Mix device is Disabled
    • Personalization Colors are back to Defaults.

I think it’s more than an opinion on what it does to SSDs. I have no SSDs, so that’s not an issue for me. Seems to me that if you create a feature, make it easy for users to utilize, the least you could do is fix it.

Fix for that "never run" will be out very shortly to the public OS. It was released last Wednesday to Release Preview and Beta Slow, along with a slew of other fixes. It fixed the issue.

You can read up on it here:

Most of those I have at the default anyway, but the System Restore one doesn't seem to happen for everyone. Some report it being turned off after every feature update. Others, including my machines, still have it turned on after a feature update. There must be some other factor at play in whether it gets turned off or not, a dependency on some other setting perhaps.

    It happens to some people.
There are a few places in the process where you can get to 99% - the download, the initial "Installing" part, and the "working on updates" part.
    Which part does it fail?
