Win 10x64 WU access denied problem

    Hello,

I got WU error and can't change the group policy either, got access denied, regarding WU. How to proceed?
Screenshot of WU error. I don't have any organization, it's a home PC.
I installed a cheap game and it shut down my WU somehow in registry. My own mistake and do not have any backups from before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, .
    I don't have any organization, it's a home PC.
This simply means that a setting - whether by regedit or the group policy editor- has been applied that is seen as one which an IT admin could apply if your PC belonged to a company.

It is not an error message.

What do you see if you click 'View configured update policies'?
    Please post a screenshot.

    Have you uninstalled the game?

Have you ever set policies using the group policy editor or done anything to affect the way Windows Update works other than via Settings? Or has this solely happened because of the game being installed?

    History:
    - when did this start?

Do you have any System Restore points? If so, the safest thing to try would be to use one. Assuming using it completes successfully- it may not.

If you don't, you could try
    a. The Windows Update Troubleshooter
    b. Reset Local Group Policy Editor Settings to Default in Windows 10
    c. Use Tweaking.com's free repair tool following the instructions carefully. Select only the Windows Update repair.

    Thanks for answers!
I have tried to set group policy to default, but get access denied error. Update troubleshooter does not help. Could try tweakings.com repair tool.

I don't have any restore points unfortunately, I have backup otherwise, but emptied those a while ago and this occurred after that = my backup already has this WU error in the backup files.

Attached screenshot. yes, I have uninstalled the game with revo uninstaller. have also checked my PC with all kinds of malware programs, have Norton 360 Delux as main security program. Nothing found. this is in the registry somehow.
For some reason the game installation triggered WU error. This started after that. But, it's removed 2 weeks ago. I just noticed this after trying manually to run WU.

I have tried to set group policy to default, but get access denied error.
    - did you run that from an elevated command prompt? (as admin) - as per the tutorial

    Update troubleshooter does not help.
ok, but what does it report? (screenshot)

Of the policies, Notify is one I use- just means the update is not applied, but you're told it's available - action centre notification.

The second is unclear as to how it is set.

Can you view that in the group policy editor?

You can try Tweaking.com's tool - no idea if it will deal with group policy issues specifically, but you may have other problems anyway.

I ran Tweaking.coms repair tool in safe mode, did not change anything. It's like someone has set some restrictions on my PC so that I cannot modify any WU settings. I understand that the game blocked WU updates for some reason. Never thought it would be this tricky to resolve. Done everything you suggested.

Check if you still have the group policy problem. Please respond to my previous post too.

Given we have no idea what arbitrary changes may have been made you could have permissions issues- services not running...

This is weird. Now WU works, but there is still mentioned in red "*Some settings are managed by your organisation". Something helped when it searches for updates. I suppose it works now. Still it's weird to have the organization mentioned there.
Update history is empty. Still when click view update history uninstall updates it shows them in separate window. It's a little messed up.

Troubleshooter fixed something according to screenshot.

    WU shows like this.

Yes, it was ran with admin rights, cmd tool. I can view GPedit tool.

What do you think? Is it okay or does it require some adjustments. Sorry if I missed some questions.

Sounds as if Tweaking.com's tool may have done something, or the troubleshooter or both, and you've been lucky.

You now know some of the possible approaches.

You should also now be aware of the need to prepare for the worst: to back up. What would you do if your PC became irrecoverably unbootable? If your system disk failed? If your PC were stolen?

This is why- and to save a great deal of time in many, but by no means all circumstances- tenforums members tirelessly recommend the routine and regular use of disk imaging as a fundamental means of protection. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + large enough external storage for image files.

    Update history is empty.
    - could well have been the result of running Tweaking.com tool. Resetting Windows Update does that.

still mentioned in red "*Some settings are managed by your organisation".
    I explained that.

Notify is useful - I don't know which the other is, if still set.

What is useful to set is to defer feature updates for 365 days - that's in Settings and group policy. That gives you control of when to upgrade. So you can wait until the bugs are solved, e.g. after the first major update after the upgrade build, then update your disk image set, then upgrade.

Here are 3 policies I have set:

I have Macrium, it's backing up every day incremental, and once per 2 weeks full backup. Backup to separate disk and doing once per month manual backup to external HDD. I did not know about this before today, thats why I did not have any backups left when it had deleted ones recently. The new ones had the error already.

I don't mind updates, usually have no problems with them. I suppose it's solved then. I can close the case. If it seems to bug me, it's possible to clean install Win. I have had that in mind for next 6 months on my to do list. Fast PC, takes not that long to re-install everything.
