Windows 10 pro not updating. Still at 1511 10.0.10586

and it hasn't updated. it's currently Version 10.0.10586

Many apps say they need the anniversary update to function
How can I manually update it

I've tried turning on insider builds again but still no windows OS updates.

I've had lots of recent application (office 2010) and AV updates.

    e.g.
    Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - March 2019 (KB890830)Security Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB4462226) 64-Bit Edition2019-02 Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB4023057)

Backup your data first. This is a non destructive process but netter to be safe.

Hi, to manually update, download an appropriate iso, rt click iso, Mount (not available if iso associated with other program), then in the new drive, click setup.exe to start the upgrade. (= in-place upgrade tutorial above)

Make sure you disable/uninstall any security software, be prepared to do a clean boot, disconnect any unnecessary peripherals; make sure you've at least, say 25Gb free on C:

    Caveats:
As it's an old build, as a matter of routine, check your disk e.g. Hard Disk Sentinel trial, HD Tune (free); run chkdsk c: /scan from an admin prompt and check the result is ok.

Then make sure your disk image is current (hope you use disk imaging e.g. Macrium Reflect - free- + large enough external storage - so often advocated here). Having an image gives you a second chance if things go wrong- and you may well need multiple attempts coming from that far back.

Have you ever disabled Windows Updates?

That is the Upgrade Assistant. While it should be able to update a system, Ken's suggestion of an in-place upgrade has the advantage that you start by making the install media as an ISO file. Should the upgrade fail, you will still have the install media to try again without the need to download the upgrade files all over again.

Should it fail the Upgrade Assistant may to try start the whole process over again, including downloading the upgrade files. At some 3GB that may not be something you'd want it to do. Plus you'll have the ISO install media to keep afterwards, should you ever need to do a clean install. The Upgrade Assistant cleans up after itself, leaving you with no install media.
