    This issue has been beaten to death on these forums. A retail Windows 7 / 8.1 license that has been upgraded will be able to transfer beyond the free upgrade period, and still access the upgrade to Windows 10, through a convoluted process of first installing Windows 7 / 8.1, then upgrading online, then formating and performing a clean install.

    A promotion being a promotion doesn't change this. The promotion is to upgrade the license like-for-like to Windows 10.

    There are some differences between a store bought retail Windows 10, and a retail Windows 7 / 8.1 upgraded, in that a store bought retail Windows 10 will not need to go through the upgrade process on a new machine, but both will retain their ability to be reinstalled on a new PC beyond the free upgrade year.

    The promotion is a free year to upgrade, and not a free year to install.
    jeez...you just do not want to hear the message do you...I can't be any more clear or constructive with the advice...

    Fair enough though...Like I said...I do agree with your position...Microsoft do not...it's your choice...I respect your decision...shame though...as you're raising all the right points....

    There is nothing saying such, and indeed retail licenses will access Windows 10 just as easily as before after mid-2016. But believe as you will, it won't change the fact that people will be transferring upgraded Windows 7 / 8 -> 10 to new devices beyond mid-2016.
    Can you tell me what the winning lottery numbers will be next week with your crystal ball, please?

    Sure. 7 / 8.1 -> 10, for the august 2016 lotto.

    Sorry, I missed your earlier request.

    If you require clarification of Microsoft policy with regard to the free promotional upgrade you will have to write to Microsoft.

    None of this really matters anyway - Windows 10 is Skynet and July 29, 2016 is Judgement Day.

    WhyMe has contacted Microsoft. He was pretty upset with them originally until they explained to him the basis of a promotional offer, and their position made sense to him. I originally considered WhyMe to be whining (in another thread) but he has changed my opinion of him and now I have great respect for him.

    It's in Microsoft's interests to explain clearly and openly where we all stand when upgrading to Windows 10 from a 7/8/8.1 retail licence. The free offer is not so great if it creates confusion, doubt and perhaps even suspicion. If the EULA is the bottom line then why aren't all Microsoft staff singing from the same hymn sheet? I came here looking for answers and I'm still unsure where I stand.

    It is very clear where you stand. From the time period of July 29, 2015 to July 28, 2016 Microsoft has offered to upgrade your Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 legally installed on a computer for free to Windows 10. Once that computer - as defined by that specific hardware configuration with limited ability to upgrade it - has been upgraded, Microsoft has agreed to continue activating Windows 10 beyond the 1 year free period - otherwise they would just be offering a free preview. That is the promotional offer. Period. End of story. Sure - there are some misleading headlines out there - Microsoft giving away Windows 10, etc. - but that is not reality. The scope of the promotional offer is a free upgrade of Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 that is installed on an existing computer.

    After July 28, 2016 if you wish to install any version of Windows 10 on a new computer whether that Windows 10 install is via upgrade or clean install - and making significant changes to an existing computer is considered making a new computer - you will have to pay for the Windows 10. As of right now, Microsoft has one set price for that Windows 10 - a full retail price with no discount for upgrading. What have you LOST? You have lost absolutely nothing. Because you never paid anything for Windows 10 to begin with and Microsoft never promised to continue upgrading new computers to Windows 10 for free nor to provide a free clean install for a new computer after July 28, 2016.

    It really is that simple. If you think Microsoft advertised something other than that - then after July 28, 2016 take them to court for not honoring what you think they advertised.
