Jeez all this is so confusing.

Wish I could simply install the insider preview right now and when Microsoft released the July 29 final build, I could simply update to it using my original 8.1 key!
I'm not very knowledgeable about this, but I think that some the responses you've received so far are misleading.

Microsoft has produced a lot of confusion about this. At one point it was stated that anyone in the Insider program would receive a full copy of Win 10, but that was retracted. If you haven't already gone here (from a previous post), see:

    http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwin...review-builds/

My current understanding is that their official line is that to get a fully activated Win10 update install, you must install it over an activated version of a qualifying older OS (7 SP1, 8.1). I doubt that you'll be able to use your 8.1 key to activate Win10; I believe that 10 must be installed as an upgrade over the qualifying OS.

If it's like previous Windows versions, there will be a work around for that. (Example: it's simple to do a clean 8.1 installation, and activation, using a Windows 8 upgrade license key.)

Supposedly a clean install of Win 10 using the free upgrade license will be possible in the future, but I don't understand how that will work.

Regardless, if you have persistent viruses that you haven't been able to eliminate, I'd proceed on the assumption that they'd survive an OS upgrade. I recommend blowing away your current OS and installing from scratch. You may be able to save data, but I wouldn't count on it.

Sorry that I can't be more encouraging.

My recommendation for the future is to maintain an image of your OS drive. I use Acronis True Image, but the built-in Windows imaging utility may be usable. The point is that you can restore from such an image in a relatively short time. (I can restore an 8.1 installation that has only a few applications installed in about 10 minutes.)

The point about using a different computer and a dvd disk he has a viruses on the one he wants to upgrade window 10 which from what I understand has 8 or 8.1 on that system. Not a good idea in my opinion to create a iso image on a computer that has viruses. No offense was meant by postings. I am not a virus experts there are some here that could help him clean the system but that is not me.

    @Abhishek,

I would suggest that you instead, reinstall Windows 8.1, then upgrade from 8.1 to 10 when it's released. You will not lose any data or have to re-install programs if you do this.

Installing the Windows 10 betas could create a situation where your upgrade does not work smoothly, and you may be forced to do another clean install. Microsoft does not put a lot of effort into verifying upgrades from beta os's is as smooth as upgrading from released OS's.

Beta software has bugs, and some of them can be very nasty sometimes. So installing a beta could mean your entire system crashes or worse, destroys your data. Only be in a beta program if you can afford to reinstall everything.

This is not a rhetorical question:

The OP wishes to get rid of some persistent viruses by installing an OS.

Is there a reliable way to re-install 8.1 over an existing partition in a way that will get rid of the viruses, but preserve data and installed applications?

My belief is that no reliable method exists to do that, and that the existing installation of Windows must be wiped.

Information to the contrary would be welcomed.

(Aside: I'm pleased that I've never picked up malware that could survive both Windows Defender and Malwarebytes.)

You misunderstood his question. He wasn't asking how to reinstall the OS without losing his apps and data. He just didn't want to have to do it TWICE (ie do it now, and then do it again when Windows 10 came out). My point is that he doesn't have to do it twice, he can reinstall Windows 8.1 now, and then do an upgrade later without having to reinstall his apps a second time.

Right. Sorry, I guess I got lost in the thread.

As others have posted, Abhishek won't lose his 8.1 license by going to a preview build.

It is not supposed to be permitted to upgrade from a preview build to the released version. Things read like it would be possible to stay in the Insider program indefinitely, but all of the Win 10 versions in that may have expiration dates, like the current preview builds.

I'd place a small bet that there'll be a work-around to install the released version as an upgrade over a preview and activate it, but you can't count on it.

At this late date (27 June), I'd recommend not fooling with a Win 10 preview, but just re-installing 8.1 (and the > 1GB of Windows Updates), and waiting for July 29.

A different computer Is to make sure you have a clean virus free install on your computer. This close to the RTM/GA of Windows 10 I would wait until July 29th and upgrade then.

If he wipes his hard drive or formats it and then install Win 8.1 all of his virus's will be gone. He can use a program called Partition Wizard and create a Boot Disk and the use it to shrink the volume to 500Mb. When I clean installed Windows 10240 as an Insider that is the size it created,
