Yes, it will be possible. Just tell Microsoft you want to keep getting preview builds.
So just keep on doing what we're doing on the PCs that we want to keep insider installs on, then opt into the RTM on the ones we don't? Sounds logical. Thank you!

No, you opt in for the Technical Preview . . . I'm pretty sure that when the time comes, you will be able to tell Microsoft what you want to do.

I will stay with the Insider Program and remain on the "Fast" track.

This begs the question, in taking the free upgrade, will it still be possible to take part in the insider programme using the same M$ Account?

    Has that been confirmed anywhere?

I think dencal's question is that if you take the free upgrade (on machine 1, say upgraded from Windows 8.1 to RTM after 29 July) and then want to continue being an Insider on another machine (say machine 2 is a VM), can machine 1 and machine 2 both use the same Microsoft account? Certainly it's a question relevant to me.

I think the wording is fuzzy.. there is an option to stay in and drop out.. but they don't mention how to stay in both.. yet. I'll assume that you can.. but not sure.

They might force people who leave the Insider Program to format.

It looks like the only system they set up for Upgrades is doing it from a genuine 7/8 system.

EDIT: According to Ending Flighting on a PC - Microsoft Community (shown when you click "stop insider builds" under Windows Update), your only choice is to revert to previous OS version via Recovery, or format.

I doubt MS will provide an alternate way to upgrade, as the current method dissuades people from punching in key that may not be theirs (friend's extra key that they didn't want upgraded maybe), plus MS probably has comprehensive anti-piracy measures in their Upgrade program.

The latter statement is true.. it's been that way for a bit. As for the first.. why format(clean install) and not stick with the upgrade??

What do you mean? By "format" I mean that users will have to go to their 7/8 system, wait for the 10 parts to download, then install the upgrade that way, rather then punching in their 7/8 key in the TP.
