    Let Windows Update download the upgrade. When Windows Update has prepared the upgrade, you will be told a restart has been scheduled. At this point you can find the install.esd file in C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources.

    @dai, Welcome to Tenforums!

    Most likely, you are looking for the Install.ESD file after you have restarted and completed the update. The Install.ESD MUST be copied before the first restart...right at the point where you are prompted to restart to complete the installation. Otherwise, the file may very likely be deleted. Please read @Kari's explanation in his tutorial for creating an ISO from the Install.ESD file.

    i have a earlier version of install esd file,but when used the iso produced list that it is the earlier version of windows

    i have queried ms as to why it is not there

    i d/load on the desktop burn the iso to upgrade the laptop,because the internet connection is that slow it takes around 7 hours to d/load and it takes all the bandwidth and the internet is unusable while it d/loads never had this problem before tpg took over iinet

    the speed virtually halved the day they took over

    If you are upgrading using an ISO, there is no install.esd file.

    You have to wait for the "Preparing to install" to finish, then it will say "Restart required". Before you restart, it will be in the Sources folder. Copy it before you restart. That simple....
