New computers do not have a BIOS. They have UEFI firmware with emulated BIOS. New OEM computers are self-activating as before. They use an OEM marker in the firmware.
For crying out loud - you are just being pedantic. The activation is still basically product key based not digital licence based.

Can I install Pro over the top without losing everything? or,

The laptop in question was bought in 2014, with either Win7 or 8.1 (can't remember exactly), then upgraded to 10 when it was first offered as a free upgrade.
Now I want to wipe it and reinstall Windows.

I go into advanced settings, and see that my MS Account is linked...
In Settings it says 1511 on my screen by the clock it says 15192
