Win10 Build 10122 Impressions / Win10 Mini Display Port Issues
Left-Over Build 6900 Errors which manifested over time.
Initial Build 10122 Impressions/Troubles:- Let me just start-out by saying that on my previous build a problem with the Start Menu developed, where pinned programs would have each other's icons, or no icon, or no icon or text unless I hovered over them and got the pop-up tooltip. I wasn't too bothered about this.
- And sometimes the Start Menu button seemed to not recognize it had been pressed. But this seemed to always be related to Tablet Mode, whereby when I clicked-it off manually, several actions would 'click' into place, such as windows would open-up, or the Start Menu would open-up again. "Tablet Mode" in general remains a poor-man's Windows 8 (never mind 8.1/update 1). But hey, it's time for Build 10122. That'll fix these nagging issues, right?
Mini Display Port & Re-Upgrade to Win10 Tech Preview Issues:- Onto Build 10122. WOW is MS in for a shit-storm of negativity with this release from me. I don't know if it's just a perfect storm.
- First I install it (upgrade via Windows Update)... and the Start Menu is all jacked-up. Several of my pinned items are gone, so I have to re-pin them. And the ones that are there, are hugely rearranged and mis-sized. The column of most used/recently installed apps is gone, and it just looks a mess. I spend time re-doing it all, only for it to reset to this crappy state the next time I restart/shut down.
- Sometimes when I open the Start Menu I get a half-working Cortana flyout that looks like it's not fully loaded etc. I try to untick 'show search button', and it simply will not remove itself when in Tablet Mode.
- File Explorer keeps freezing-up on me as I try to navigate through the folders. To the point where I have to keep end-tasking from Task Manager. I literally can't open a media file from File Explorer because I can't burrow deep enough into the folder structure to get to Videos/TV Shows/TV Show X/Season Y/Episode Z. So I try the opposite way, starting from the media player, and opening a file from within there. That too freezes. So I sit around and debate weather to see if it will fix itself after a couple of restarts/shut down full bootups.
- Somewhere along the way into Build 10122 I notice that I now have duplicate user folders (like two Videos) in my This PC page, and in the left navigation pane of File Explorer. This is different to them being duplicates inside the User folder, where I could pretty much ignore them. So I fire-up WinAero's ThisPCTweaker x64, and attempt to remove the duplicate Videos folder. Both disappear. Oh great. Add one of them back, and both return. Reset Defaults in TPCTx64, and I only get Desktop and Videos back, the other folders are gone. I should note that up until this point, my mini display port was working fine.
- This was the last straw for me, so I think 'F it', and do a Refresh of the PC. The Refresh of the PC (keep files, kill software and apps) seems to work. It brings me to a clean Build 10122. Still has Start Menu weird sizes and missing pinned items, and the search button won't disappear from Tablet Mode. But at least the This PC/navigation pane has no duplicate user folders; and File Explorer isn't a freezing-up mess which gave me war flashbacks of Windows Vista. However everything was REALLY tiny (display slider set to 100% and not 150%), so I changed that to get the sizing right again.
- I thought things were going ok. Then I discovered my Mini Display port was no longer working. It wouldn't duplicate the Surface Pro screen on my HDTV, the TV nor the SPro reacted to the wire being plugged in. I hoped and prayed it was a Build 10122 issue and not a hardware defect. It wasn't. Why the hell would a firmware/os update knock-out a feature like that? That's completely crazy!
- So now I'm sat here on vanilla Windows 8.0, mini display port working just fine. Touchscreen (Tablet Mode) reacting to me just fine and not causing strange glitches. And I'm beginning to wonder if Win10 isn't just a really big step back from Win8.1 update 1.
Mini Display Error Fixed... Somehow- Installed Win10 Build 7400 on top of Win8.0.
The Set-Up process was a bit messed-up, when usually it is smooth sailing. After you log-in with your Microsoft Account, it kept restarting that part a few times, so eventually I ended-up with both a Local Account and my Microsoft Account. Deleted the Local Account without issue so far.
- When I was configuring the upgrade to Win10 Build 7400, I did it specifically keeping 'Nothing'. Got onto Build 7400, and already the mini display adaptor has stopped working. I'm not even upgraded to 10122 yet. Previously the mini display port kept working until I hit 10122 and even then it was working until I did a refresh to stop file explorer freezing and several other issues. Currently I'm thinking the Refresh This PC / Keep Nothing When Upgrading is killing the Mini Display Port.
- Right now I'm using Windows Update on the fast ring to update to 10122 in the hopes that it will magically fix my mini display port issues.
- If that doesn't work I'll be going back to Win8.0 again, and this time upgrading to Win10 7400 but keeping the default upgrade configuration behaviour (which I think is to keep whatever files and settings are on the machine), in the hopes that this carries-forward working mini display port functionality.
- I had the hdmi / mini display wire still plugged in from it not working on 7400, as the 'getting ready' install process for the 10122 upgrade got to 35% my hdtv starts showing the surface's screen. Still works now after a restart as it went from 50% to 100%. The 10122 update did magically fix the issue, which I didn't expect to happen.
After subsequent testing, it remains working for now, after I got back into Windows itself, after a restart and a full shutdown, and after I unplugged and reinserted the wire.
