Win10 Build 10122 Impressions / Win10 Mini Display Port Issues

Left-Over Build 6900 Errors which manifested over time.
    - Let me just start-out by saying that on my previous build a problem with the Start Menu developed, where pinned programs would have each other's icons, or no icon, or no icon or text unless I hovered over them and got the pop-up tooltip. I wasn't too bothered about this.

    - And sometimes the Start Menu button seemed to not recognize it had been pressed. But this seemed to always be related to Tablet Mode, whereby when I clicked-it off manually, several actions would 'click' into place, such as windows would open-up, or the Start Menu would open-up again. "Tablet Mode" in general remains a poor-man's Windows 8 (never mind 8.1/update 1). But hey, it's time for Build 10122. That'll fix these nagging issues, right?
    Initial Build 10122 Impressions/Troubles:
    - Onto Build 10122. WOW is MS in for a shit-storm of negativity with this release from me. I don't know if it's just a perfect storm.

    - First I install it (upgrade via Windows Update)... and the Start Menu is all jacked-up. Several of my pinned items are gone, so I have to re-pin them. And the ones that are there, are hugely rearranged and mis-sized. The column of most used/recently installed apps is gone, and it just looks a mess. I spend time re-doing it all, only for it to reset to this crappy state the next time I restart/shut down.

    - Sometimes when I open the Start Menu I get a half-working Cortana flyout that looks like it's not fully loaded etc. I try to untick 'show search button', and it simply will not remove itself when in Tablet Mode.

    - File Explorer keeps freezing-up on me as I try to navigate through the folders. To the point where I have to keep end-tasking from Task Manager. I literally can't open a media file from File Explorer because I can't burrow deep enough into the folder structure to get to Videos/TV Shows/TV Show X/Season Y/Episode Z. So I try the opposite way, starting from the media player, and opening a file from within there. That too freezes. So I sit around and debate weather to see if it will fix itself after a couple of restarts/shut down full bootups.

    - Somewhere along the way into Build 10122 I notice that I now have duplicate user folders (like two Videos) in my This PC page, and in the left navigation pane of File Explorer. This is different to them being duplicates inside the User folder, where I could pretty much ignore them. So I fire-up WinAero's ThisPCTweaker x64, and attempt to remove the duplicate Videos folder. Both disappear. Oh great. Add one of them back, and both return. Reset Defaults in TPCTx64, and I only get Desktop and Videos back, the other folders are gone. I should note that up until this point, my mini display port was working fine.

    - This was the last straw for me, so I think 'F it', and do a Refresh of the PC. The Refresh of the PC (keep files, kill software and apps) seems to work. It brings me to a clean Build 10122. Still has Start Menu weird sizes and missing pinned items, and the search button won't disappear from Tablet Mode. But at least the This PC/navigation pane has no duplicate user folders; and File Explorer isn't a freezing-up mess which gave me war flashbacks of Windows Vista. However everything was REALLY tiny (display slider set to 100% and not 150%), so I changed that to get the sizing right again.

    - I thought things were going ok. Then I discovered my Mini Display port was no longer working. It wouldn't duplicate the Surface Pro screen on my HDTV, the TV nor the SPro reacted to the wire being plugged in. I hoped and prayed it was a Build 10122 issue and not a hardware defect. It wasn't. Why the hell would a firmware/os update knock-out a feature like that? That's completely crazy!

    - So now I'm sat here on vanilla Windows 8.0, mini display port working just fine. Touchscreen (Tablet Mode) reacting to me just fine and not causing strange glitches. And I'm beginning to wonder if Win10 isn't just a really big step back from Win8.1 update 1.
Mini Display Port & Re-Upgrade to Win10 Tech Preview Issues:
    - Installed Win10 Build 7400 on top of Win8.0.
The Set-Up process was a bit messed-up, when usually it is smooth sailing. After you log-in with your Microsoft Account, it kept restarting that part a few times, so eventually I ended-up with both a Local Account and my Microsoft Account. Deleted the Local Account without issue so far.

    - When I was configuring the upgrade to Win10 Build 7400, I did it specifically keeping 'Nothing'. Got onto Build 7400, and already the mini display adaptor has stopped working. I'm not even upgraded to 10122 yet. Previously the mini display port kept working until I hit 10122 and even then it was working until I did a refresh to stop file explorer freezing and several other issues. Currently I'm thinking the Refresh This PC / Keep Nothing When Upgrading is killing the Mini Display Port.

    - Right now I'm using Windows Update on the fast ring to update to 10122 in the hopes that it will magically fix my mini display port issues.

    - If that doesn't work I'll be going back to Win8.0 again, and this time upgrading to Win10 7400 but keeping the default upgrade configuration behaviour (which I think is to keep whatever files and settings are on the machine), in the hopes that this carries-forward working mini display port functionality.
    Mini Display Error Fixed... Somehow
    - I had the hdmi / mini display wire still plugged in from it not working on 7400, as the 'getting ready' install process for the 10122 upgrade got to 35% my hdtv starts showing the surface's screen. Still works now after a restart as it went from 50% to 100%. The 10122 update did magically fix the issue, which I didn't expect to happen.

After subsequent testing, it remains working for now, after I got back into Windows itself, after a restart and a full shutdown, and after I unplugged and reinserted the wire.

    New Build 10122 Impressions:

    - Currently on 10122 with working mini display port and file explorer isn't freezing-up (yet). Start Button is responsive (opens when clicked, at least in Desktop mode, haven't touched Tablet Mode yet). Most Used/Recently Installed lists appear like they should; accept there are no live tiles pinned yet since I kept nothing in the upgrade to Build 7400. So, lets go looking around 10122 with a fresh pair of eyes.

    - In Settings > Personalisation > Start, the 'Customize List' section is all greyed-out. The 'Use full-screen Start when in Desktop' option does make the Start Screen full-screen, but it hides the Most Used/Recently Installed List behind a hamburger menu, which is just stupid. I do like how pressing the hamburger menu gives you the list in a nice darker shade compared to the 'live tile area' of the Start Menu. That looks hot and needs to come to the regular non-full-screen Start Menu. When in 'full-screen' mode, the live tiles on the Start Menu just float awkwardly. I think this would look a lot better if the hamburger menu wasn't there, and the list was shown by default.

    - In Modern Settings, you can no longer 'pin' settings pages to the Start Menu. The button to pin is gone. I guess I won't be having Date/Time, Bluetooth and Windows Update pinned to my Start Menu after all. Goddamit.

    - In Modern Settings > Personalisation > Lock Screen, even though I select Calendar app to show detailed information, it has the Mail app icon.

    - I've been meaning to ask this for a while now. Is there any way to completely turn Cortana off, and make the Start Menu/Cortana search box only return results that are from your files/apps/settings? The default Windows 8.1 behaviour, without serving me results from the web or offering suggestions?

    - I appear to have some old version of the Start Menu. On the right-click on taskbar Properties menu, Navigation tab, it still references when pointing to the top right corner show the Charms. And unlike in a previous Win10 tech preview build, I no longer seem to be able to tell File Explorer to launch to This PC instead of Quick Access.

    Possible User Account Error?

I'm concerned that my ** REMOVED ** Microsoft Account's user account profile under C:\Users has the name C:\Users\ksdix. It's never been "ksdix" before, usually it's C:\Users\karl. The name of the user folder in the file explorer navigation pane is the usual "Karl Dixon". I wonder if this is something that could cause file/settings permission/access problems later-on, and if it's related to the hiccup during the re-upgrade to 7400 where I ended-up with an MS account and a Local Account.

I'm not sure about the Customize List, it's probably something that hasn't been finished yet. The full screen hamburger was added based on user feedback. Full screen is designed for smaller screen devices like phones and tablets, so hiding it behind a hamburger menu gives more screen real-estate for tiles, but gives you instant access to the app lists... Yeah, it's not so important on a larger screen.

You can right click on the item in the list on the left and choose pin to start.

There are a lot of problems with icons in this release.

It's there for everyone, but it's greyed out. Changing the start location works for me.

Yeah... I ****ed this up. Currently locked-out of my Surface Pro.
Local account 'Karl' shows-up, but won't log-in as there's no longer an account.
Microsoft Account will not log-in with the password, nor the updated password I reset it to online.

Went into safe mode to use recovery usb stick, that said it was invalid.
Tried automatic startup repair, which failed, and now I can't even get back to the windows login page, I just keep getting thrown to the safe mode options but reset/refresh/reset from usb stick/automatic repair do not work.

Currently re-downloading the surface pro recovery image from MS's website, and also re-downloading the Win10 x64 7400 iso, in the hopes that one or the other will provide it with enough data to do a reset to either Windows 8 or Windows 10 TP.

I ****ing hate it when stuff like this happens.

It works just fine with the exception of the blurry icons.. that's going to be fixed so not a big deal at this point. Edge,, needs a lot more work but that's to be expected at this stage.

Sigh. Nope. Currently creating a system restore point recovery disc from a x86 win10 install i have, hoping that will let me do something overon the x64 surface pro.

    Windows 10 build 10122

Ok I finally got this build to install over 10074. I was getting the 18% failed error copying files like so many other SP3 users.
My machine is an SP3/i7/256Gb. I tried all the workarounds to no avail, but eventually I tried about the 5th time and it just worked.
    Weird!!!

Anyway, now that she's on, this build is MUCH MUCH MUCH Better and Nicer than 10074. I really hated 10074, it was just clunky and very annoying to use on a day to day basis. This 10122 build is a lot cleaner and a lot more refined.

The Task Bar click issue is fixed where I had to always click really hard or almost double click to launch anything. Thank god.

The new Start Menu is also a lot nicer. But still some annoying issues I'd love to see resolved:
    - Can I make the side/apps part of the Full Screen Start Menu always shown by default? I like that part of the menu and I want it there all the time. I hate expanding it with the hamburger menu every time.
    - Not sure why the large metro style icons jump a few inches every time you expand/close the hamburger menu as well?? Seems weird..

    GREAT IMPROVEMENTS:
    - Continuum is looking much much better. Loving it now. This is the vision I had for it in my head, yay they made it work.
    - Now also I love that I can use the touch screen to click areas of a web page e.g. a text field WITHOUT the stupid on-screen keyboard from popping up and covering the screen. I still want to use the physical keyboard, but I just wanted to touch the screen as a short cut because it's quicker than scrolling. Yay yay yay. These are good improvements.
    - The notifications and settings areas are starting to look nicer and tidier as well. NICE.

Getting there MS, keep the improvements coming. Particular the Start Menu needs more refinement please.

    Further Impressions:

    Mini Display Port issues again.

7400 killed the Mini Display port again, and 10122 brought it back again. So weird. Why would that happen?

Okay... Seriously! What's going on with Local Accounts vs Microsoft Accounts on Build 10122?
I spoke earlier about an issue I had when doing an upgrade which 'kept nothing':

    - Installed Win10 Build 7400 on top of Win8.0.
The Set-Up process was a bit messed-up, when usually it is smooth sailing. After you log-in with your Microsoft Account, it kept restarting that part a few times, so eventually I ended-up with both a Local Account and my Microsoft Account. Deleted the Local Account without issue so far.
"So far"... he says at the end of that message. Oh I got hella problems later-on when I rebooted my machine. But that's in the past now, thank god. It was trying to fix-up the user accounts that made me accidentally brick my SPro yesterday, and the issues still seem to not be fixed. I finally got back to vanilla Windows 8.0, and logged-in with my Microsoft Account as I always do (I like the calendar and mail apps to pull-down my stuff via sync.)

Upgraded to Win10 Build 7400 and kept user profiles/settings/files, just in case I ran into the error described in the quote, where it looped the account creation part of the install process again.

Now on Build 10122 again, and when setting-things up in Settings, I notice it says to 'switch to a Microsoft Account'. Huh? My 'name' on the log-in page is my email address, and my password is my email password. I already 'am' logged-in with my MS Account, aren't I? I try to switch, as the Settings page tells me, and I after entering my email log-in details, I get thrown an error message that it can't be done at this time, Error Code 0x80070005 (a catch-all ACESS DENIED code). The hell is going-on, Microsoft?

OK, I did an "update" from 10074 to 10122 and not only did it keep everything, it didn't ask me about whether or not to use an MS account; instead, it kept the local account. I had read here about the complicated steps to take to FORCE the install to use a local account, and based on this experience, that must only apply to Clean installs.

One downside of this update is that it crashed just into the update, in the process, trash Win10TP, Win8.1, and all 1.5TB of my shared drive. Have spend the last two days recovering these.

Lesson learned (the hard way) is that in future updates, have ONLY the Win10 drive connected -- so that nothing else gets damaged in the process.

Have been updating Win10TP installs since the very beginning and never had a problem anything like this before.
