Is there any way to bring back the search field in the start menu only? I really hate having to have the "new" one always showing in the taskbar. I've grown completely accustomed to pressing WIN when I want to search for something. And having to click the new icon with the mouse feels... weird to say the least.

Well, you really should learn to use it. It will get progressively harder and harder to use Windows without UAC, and eventually it will be impossible. The single WORST thing you can do is turn UAC on and off for various purposes, because doing so disables and enables virtualization. So what can happen is files can get written to non-virtualized areas when not in UAC mode, and then when in UAC mode they act totally differently. You should either be in UAC 100% of the time or 0% of the time.

If you're going to always have it off, then you might as well go back to Windows 7, because this will NOT get any easier as more and more of the OS becomes Universalized. Universal apps can't work without UAC, it's part of the infrastructure, and it just won't function without it.

Hasn't become increasingly annoying/harder for me to ignore UAC since the days of its inclusion. I always disable UAC as the last thing before the first reboot after a (re)install. Haven't run into anything that requires it to be on so far - and I intend to fight it and its completely superfluous (read: annoying and interrupting) popups till my dying breath :P

I don't use any apps on desktop, too. I may be using some of them unknowingly because it's on start menu but I don't download any apps.
I only use apps on my Windows Phone because that's what smartphones and tablets are all about.
Yeah, on the tablet I use a lot of apps - from the Google playstore.

You can get rid of the Cortana search field in the taskbar. Just right click on the taskbar and disable it. Then you get a search field with Start.

Oh... Well I'm not getting that. If I change search to "Disabled" from "Show Search box" it just vanishes completely. Doesn't appear when the start menu is open (like it did in the previous build) or anything.

    Edit: Screenshot for clarification.

I installed this build on my Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro. Installation was very fast compared to previous ones.

But alas, while I like the direction it seems to be taking, I don't like crashing things! Spartan Project is flakey, Tap-a-talk crashes every time and that is one of my main programs. And the trackpad quits working, or I guess I should say it is an on again, off again kind of thing.

So back to Win 8.1 for me.

Try Right-click Start Button, left-click Search in context menu.

It works! I could have swear I already tried this... maybe I did. The Start Menu is acting a bit funky all in all. Not always opening and closing immediately.

My only objection to moving everything into PC Setting is UAC must be enabled. I prefer to run with UAC off but I have to switch back and forth now.

Let me use PC Setting with UAC disabled and I'd be fairly content with it.

If i were you i wouldn't disable UAC.
    Reed this.

What is UAC (User Account Control) Why You Should Not Turn it Off[
    From the above article:
What Is User Account Control (UAC) in Windows?

UAC is a security feature of Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 which helps prevent unauthorized changes to your computer. These changes can be initiated by applications, viruses or other users. User Account Control makes sure these changes are made only with approval from the administrator. If the changes are not approved by the administrator, they are not executed and Windows remains unchanged. It is as if nothing happened. :)
How Does User Account Control (UAC) Work?

In modern editions of Windows, applications run by default without any administrative permissions. They have the same permissions a normal user account has: they cannot make any changes to the operating system, its system files or the machine’s registry settings. Also, they cannot change anything that’s owned by other user accounts. Applications can change only their own files and registry settings.
When an application wants to make a system change like: modifications which affect other users, modifications of system files and folders, installation of new software, an UAC prompt is shown, asking for permission.
That is exactly my point. When all is said and done, UAC is a "Are you sure you want to do that" prompt that is annoying and (this is my opinion) people tend to click OK or Continue automatically after a very short period of time of these annoying prompts. I don't want it, don't need it and am perfectly capable of maintaining security on my Personal Computer.

Good article but nothing new to me there.

    Thanks though.
