Toolbar is the way to go. I use it since Vista. Here is the very old tutorial I had made at the time which is still applicable:

Toolbars - How to Use in Windows 7 and Vista - Windows 7 Help Forums

And here is my Win10 toolbar:

    Attachment 15192
Another good tuturial "WHS" Since I tried this and it worked very well I thought ...... my bookmarks toolbar in FF was always full and I have been using short text names to describe the link i.e. Windows 7 Forum, I use W7. So I was able to install a new folder on bookmarks toolbar, moved some similar links into it and now it functions to save space and I can use the full names.

After many tries, I have resolved only major issue for me by installing WiFi driver from station-drivers, WiFi won't start whenever I shut down the system, I had to Restart to get my WiFi, now with the new drivers I'm quite happy

    The search feature gets results.
Type a few letters, and the app / program is listed ok.
The issue with the current Cortana search function is that it doesn't find specific files or folders. Although I'm sure this is a temporary issue with the technical preview, along with the forced web search. Some people seem to have forgotten this is a technical preview, to test functionality and preferences of users.

You're probably right. I admit to being uninterested here. I type in "what is cortana" and the result is a reference to a phone personality similar to apple's "siri" ... pleading ignorance here and not caring. I thought the search box at the bottom of the start menu was designed to find items in the start menu along with web results if enabled. I doubt that cortana was designed to replace the search function in "file explorer" desktop windows ...

Anyway, I personally see no need for the implementation of a phone personality on a desktop computer other than for humor.
I say everything works, but that is because I do not do much of anything other than pick items off the start menu and stream videos or run media files.

Where it says "Search the web and Windows" if something like "wor" is entered, Wordpad is displayed.
But if "comp" is entered, there is no reference to "this pc" or "computer" ... had to scroll down to "windows system" to find the nested reference.

The search results seems to ignore items that are already pinned to the start menu.

I pasted about 200 shortcuts into the location "C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" and it will find any shortcuts copied and pasted there with a few key strokes.

The "file explorer" search still works best to find files and folders specifically.
There are specialists on this forum that are vastly more expert than I am on search issues.

Anyway, I don't care about extra clicks or working to find things.
Up until now, I have been doing "clean installs" on a variety of Operating Systems, apparently almost every other day for the past 3 or 4 years. lol

    Hi there

Here's my way of doing it -- I think it's really flexible --you can also add Metro apps and Internet links to the menus (cascadable to as many levels as you want too). Absolutely no reg hacks or anything required. (For Metro apps I've made a reference to ICOFX if you want to create decent ICONS for these but you don't have to use it and it is FREE. You can also create your own icons for apps if you don't like the standard windows default ones..
