Insider 14316 bug - Start menu search, chars not showing

I upgraded to the insider 14316 build. Now when I click on the Start menu and type something to search for, nothing shows, neither what I'm typing nor the results.

In this pic, I pressed the Windows key then typed msra. Nothing shows in the search or results area but if I press Enter I get the Remote assistance windows.

Edit: Forgot to mention this is in a Oracle Virtualbox VM of Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview 64 bit.

What does Classic Shell or Start10 do if you try those options? It is so nice that Microsoft cannot just leave 10 alone. The more they change stuff, the more they break the OS.

I didn't try either of the Start menu replacements. Just finished a Clean install and the problem is resolved. Everything works as it should now.

Start 8 still works with ten. I figured clean install would do it. If they do not fix it when it rolls, a lot of people will be blocking updates. I

I haven't seen a clean install of 10 on the main since the 10565 build was available at Tech Bench in iso format for download. Once the TH2 was on I stopped the Insider builds until that got buggy and February then saw the 14257 after a long wait go on and each new build since. When I hit the win key the Start menu on the main will open unless I click on one of the VMs running 10 but not on VBox however.

The latest VMware Workstation 12.1.0 Player that replaced the VM Player 7.1.2 now 7.1.3 with December update offers quire a bit more. Even a clean install of 7 VM just saw the second Insider build go on first being the initial upgrade on VM from 7 to 10 for a test and not one issue. That a change from the buggy upgrades ran into last summer! :)

I found out why this bug popped up. They are bringing those stupid tiles back, because too many people who are not power users, want them.

Looks like 7 is going to be staying on a lot of machines.

The tiles never went anywhere! What MS pulled with this new form of Start menu people wanted back was incorporate Metro into the new tile section! You could see that right off with the early TP builds well before the 10 launch date last summer as well as still seeing teh full screen Tablet mode for touchscreen devices. 10 is now a dual platform OS where 8 should have been originally while 7 was the last single platform offering for the desktop.

I think this has been one of the main items people who come in late on 10 are getting confused over about what 10 is now should have been what MS brought in with 8 when going to introduce a new dual platform form of OS having gutted things out of Windows including the Start menu for 8 which they then realized was a total flop to then rush 8.1 out with some fixes.

They are now pushing 10 like crazy to get back what was lost with the last two mishaps instead of having worked things out still keeping the line in progression from where 7 left off. The free upgrade at this time was to get people running their test builds from day one to gather up feedback of the way people would rather see the Windows OS. I have the suspicion that there will a few changes coming this summer with the Redstone 1 update that is being let out! Presently they are seeing how the upgrade by WU works out first before abandoning seeing Windows sold on media while I still was able to get 10 on dvd.

The tiles go away when you use the third party start menu options. Microsoft is going to start making it harder to use options to get rid of their stupid start menu design. The majority of the Redstone updates are being put into the Insider updates, but then right before they finalize the build, Microsoft has been yanking them out of the builds, so that they can see how many are using features, and if they are going to make it.

There are a lot of things in Windows that people never use, but Microsoft does not give you any option to strip them out, unlike Linux does.

I am already looking at Mac Mini's for replacing the desktop or a Macbook Pro Retina to replace my laptop when it dies.

Going "Fruit Company" isn't a via option here sorry! As for Linux that will continue to remain a "Secondary OS" when being run at all. As for the tiles seen on the new Start menu as well as the full screen Start seen for the Tablet mode you have to accept the notion that Windows is now a dual platform Desktop/Mobile type OS while 7 wasn't. 7 saw still saw Netbooks as well as Tablet PC in years past while now you have Dual OS to cover both needs is how the MS thinking is working.

Since MS stripped the works out of the WMPlayer you now see the Windows DVD Player option tossed in with the free upgrade offer until..... you perform a clean install(or simply upgrade to the next Insider build) and then would need to pay for that separately at the MS online store.
