    Hi there.

What made it almost unuseable for me was the modified start menu with a non functioning search. A member on this Forum (Thanks Dave44) suggested a reg hack to get the menu back to the resizeable version of the previous build with the search bar (that works).

Endless scrolling whether vertically or horizontally is NOT what I want or need on any type of OS - least of all on a Desktop OS. The menu fix has now made the latest build really OK for me in spite of some mis givings like the still cackhanded division of functions between the Control panel and Pc settings -- I understand why the control panel needs to be changed over a period but Windows could start integrating the functions much better by making the Control panel in a way that it was at least LAUNCED from the PC settings. That way the functionality would at least START from a common point for PC settings.

So I've decided to keep on with it -- currently my only real gripes now are probably not actually in Ms's domain -- VMWARE 11 and VMPLAYER 7 don't enable 3D (VMware 10 does so I might revert back) and Unity mode (aka "Desktop Integration or rather like "XP Mode") doesn't work properly with this build.

I would prefer to keep VMware 11 as it uses DYNAMIC RAM for VM's (very useful feature) and if you convert the VM's to WKS 11 format then they run very much more efficiently. I can live without the 3D for a while for what I do on VM's but I miss Unity mode. Still undecided about reverting back to using Workstation 10.

(@ Kari I'm NOT using HYPER-V as I run the same VM's on both Windows and Linux Hosts. The identical VM with its configuration file runs on either LINUX or WINDOWS HOSTS without change in any way - just open the vm and power it on using either OS as HOST).

Anyway here's the old menu back again with a screenshot of the (IMO useless) new version as well. On the old one I can just type in WORD 2010 and Word starts for example rather than having to scroll down the entire menu list with the new version.

For those that want the previous (resizeable) menu back here's a link to Dave44's thread : (note - if you apply the fix you won't be able to expand the menu to the start screen - so think what suits you before making the choice).

Has anyone tried a full install on a touch device yet

Mine is in a VM on a touch device so I don't think I get the full experience of using touch on it

Swiping for Charms bar I believe is totally gone, what about swiping the left for app switching is that gone also (neither of these have worked in VM's for me previously so cannot try it myself)

    Hi there.

I am running mine as a VM on a Touch laptop (HP envy sleekbook).

Note that in the new build there is NO CHARMS bar any more. (There might be a different implementation of charms before RTM though).

Touch works up to a point in a VM. For instance you can launch applications from the taskbar via Touch.

Metro apps work from the start menu in Windowed mode - I'm essentially in "Desktop mode" - I might try an install and try tablet mode later). Standard apps (Office for example) work from the menu as normal desktop applications.

Note I've reverted back to the "older menu" as per build 9879 not the "new menu" as the default one in build 9926.

Onscreen keyboard works just fine - other languages too work correctly --but a wireless USB keyboard only seems to work in the installation language - GB English - or depending where you got the windows build from.

Powerpoint seems to accept touch but it doesn't do to much yet (probably because I'm still using Office 2010).

As a VM Touch seems to work passably - I will try and switch to the START SCREEN mode rather than desktop mode and have another play on the VM with more touch.

You can slide windows across with touch - I like that when I'm using a second screen too (although my second screen is NON touch so I have to slide the window back with a Mouse if I want it back on the touch screen). To slide the windows touch at the TOP of the window outside the application area.

I've got a copy of Office 2013 I can play with for better touch integration -- that's why I like VM's - easy to test lots of different configurations.

In windows I can scroll with touch (up and down sliders for example reviewing Forum Posts) and do a limited amount of re-size.

I can't do the "Pinch thing" like Android for enlarging / decreasing windows = at least not in desktop mode.

My Host is CENTOS rel 7 - Touch is fine on that so I don't expect the fact that I'm running in a VM to make much difference.

    Cheers

    Cheers,
Office 2013 works quite well for touch in 8.1 (tablet), it has additional bits added more for touch
I have the 365 version with a spare license, will try this in 10 next week to see how it performs (off out for the day shortly so wont have time today)

...And, the 'Additional clocks' link opens 'World Clock' portion of the 'Alarms' App.

@Jimbo The new Start Menu/Screen is a big turnoff for me. The messed up search function is no.2 on my list, especially since I can't find anything now. < only a slight exaggeration. I can find what I want but I have to dig for it and settings are scattered all over. First impressions are, "I do not want this". I'll stay with 8.1 thank you very much. I had high hopes and at present I'm really disappointed. On the plus side, it's only a preview and things could change, there is still hope. Time will tell.
My thoughts exactly! Option for Start menu full screen?!! Not the answer for me. Where's Continuum? I thought that would be the thing that would make it more like 8.1. I wonder if one needs a touch screen for that to install?
I do have touch so be interesting if you see the options

1, Under the Notification centre quick launch buttons, think it says tablet mode, click to change
2, In the settings app is an option on the left called Tablet, this then has an option for tablet mode on/off

Turning either of these on give me a full screen menu and full screen apps (nice for apps, not so good for desktop programs)
    Thanks, Paul. :)

Extremely busy with my remodel and finally getting to this. The tablet mode basically places the Start menu at full screen, which the menu has a button at the top right to do so, in which it remains in full screen mode.

In playing with it a little this morning I found they basically did away with the Start screen and made the Start menu bigger or ability for full screen scrolling vertically. I see tiles are in titled groups instead of columns and are easily moved arranged like with the phone.

Cortana is a nice addition. It installed my settings/favorites for it just like I have for my phone.

Apps continue not to snap properly yet. Hopefully they'll work that out.

I'll play with it more, but so far all in all this continues to step back to the desktop, which is the wrong direction IMO.

Just installed & initial feelings are not too impressive.

Don't like the new Start Menu, why can't Microsoft listen to what people are saying which is (as far as I can see) something akin to Windows 7 for the Start Menu & Windows 8 for the Start Screen.

Thank goodness, Start8 still works & provides a substitute Windows 7 Start Menu.

    Program compatibility hasn't improved.

Try Dave44 workaround to the Start Menu: https://www.tenforums.com/general-dis...tart-menu.html

Have I missed something, or has the option to select Start Menu or Start Screen been removed.

Before the update, you could right right click for options to select preferred interface.
