Will this work if going from a larger HDD to a smaller SSD. I've done this before but I don't remember what program I used or even how I did it.
As long as the data used on each partition of the spinner is not larger than the space available on the SSD partitions you are copying to, you should be fine.

Easiest way (assuming contents of hdd will fit on ssd) is to backup to an image file, and restore image to sdd. This usually guarantees proper boundary alignment as well with major packages.

No apologies needed. I am glad that you re-confirmed what I said since other posts advising the OP to use a 6 year old thread from Windows 7 to do the alignment which is not neccessary because Macrium will do all of that.. In addition, also perform trimming on the new SSD.

Thanks! My SSD should be here in a day or two. I have done this 3 different times but I'm not sure how I did it. I do remember the first time I did it I had to shrink the partition of the HDD so it would fit on the SSD.

Totally agree with you on that. This will my fourth SSD. Two of them are in laptops and one is in a desktop. I purchased a new desktop after Christmas and I'm going to replace the 1TB HDD with a 500GB Samsung 850 EVO. The 1TB Seagate HDD is going to be my data drive. I ordered it Sunday and was hoping it would be delivered today. Maybe tomorrow or Monday.

Nice Choice too, Samsungs are really great SSD's :) Some of you folks are lucky, because here in Maine we have never had deliveries on a Sunday
