Can't update / upgrade from build 10240
I installed the Tech Preview and registered as an Insider early on and largely rode the updates/releases when published, until build 10240. I sat on this build for a while (disabled the Windows Update service) and didn't do much with this preview install for a while. Now I'm wanting to work with it more and would like to update/upgrade to the latest build. I enabled/started the Windows Update service, but it won't update. If I go to Windows Update in Settings, besides the title bar, all I see is a blank page/pane with activity dots indefinitely flying across the top. Same deal if I open Settings and search for 'Advanced' and click on Advanced Windows Update options.
Troubleshooting steps taken:
- Reboot numerous times
- Leave it sit for many hours
- Boot into safe mode with networking
- Stop bits, wuauserv and cryptsvc services, rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 and start the previously stopped services
- Ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter
- Ran sfc /scannow (no problems found)
- Ran dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth (no problems found)
- Clean Booted
- Reset Windows. The process appears to complete (I see something like 95% before the system reboots; not sure if it actually gets to 100% or if it fails before) but after restarting, I see a message like boot device inaccessible. I've tried the reset process 3 or so times, it successfully reverts to the pre-reset environment after rebooting 2 or 3 times.
Earlier, after update attempts, I would open the WindowsUpdateClient Operational log and review logged errors, but now when I try to access that log, I see an error message, "MMC has detected an error in a snap-in and will unload it." I can either report the error to Microsoft and shut down MMC or unload the snap-in and continue running MMC.
If I open Windows Store, I see there are 27 app updates detected, but the download/update attempts fail with, "Something went wrong. The error code is 0x80070005, in case you need it."
Is there a way to download and clean-install the latest Insider build without wiping out my Windows/Insider activation/registration? Any other ideas for getting Windows Updates working?
Thanks in advance!
