Been really busy, so just getting back to this. I know I can configure it to use the Start Screen vs The Start menu, but with a touch screen can you boot to the Start Screen? It's greyed out for me. Wondering if they'll turn it on in a future build.

Also, to clarify > Touch is enabled, correct?
With touch it boots directly onto the Start Screen, this is the default settings and looks almost like 8/8.1, all store apps I have pinned are shown and in the same order/grouping I use in 8, the only things missing are desktop programs

I am using it via VM which I think causes touch to be limited (I get no edge swipes), so for me the start screen is as touch friendly as it gets
Thanks, Paul. Hopefully in futures builds we will have a choice. :)

HG just has it in for me as I am a proud desktop user and don't, won't live in Modern metro land. I have a bunch of software going back 10 years plus and there is no way in hell I am buying that again just to be part of M$ walled garden. Don't you realise what M$ is trying to do here? You have an account, you have it tied to your bank account, they can bill you for what you used to get for free..... You want this app. 10$ GBP 10 Euro. They will give you something at first to try and then bill you for it. Before you know you'll be paying $50 a month just to run your PC. Oh you want a new video card driver..there on special this week......$25 down from $50 but hurry. I am not attacking anyone personally (then proceeds too) but be sure you want to live in Microsoft's fairy dairy land because the idea is to monetize everything. If the Pro or Enterprise version costs $150 and the core version is free, I'll be buying it so I don't live on MS Farmville. You may think I am nuts but this is exactly the plan they have in mind. Pay up or get a disabled OS.

HG I'm glad you got your PC sorted out. Finally got a PSU that did not fail.

This is exactly what MS has to figure out
... make an OS that meets the needs and requirements of the end users. Transition is a bitch!

Desktop users don't necessarily want the Modern side and Tablet/ Phone users don't need the Desktop side. I've stated my opinion before ... all of this will be moot when we're wearing our machines or they're incorporated into everyday appliances. That future isn't that far away - there are already Smart houses and connected homes (alarms, locks, heating/cooling) plus the NRF plug-ins. Our cars have all sorts of 'computers' in them (ever wonder how tire pressure sensors work on a spinning wheel? NRF!)

There are some long standing hurdles to getting past the Kbd, Mse, Touch input - namely voice recognition. My code had enough bugs in it due to fat fingers without some app misinterpreting what I said But it is improving.

Thought I'd mention that my MS account is not tied to my bank account - nor is any other account (retail, travel, credit card, phone or cable ...).

And not to pick nits, but isn't that what business does - charge for the stuff they make? The plan to squeeze every ounce of revenue out of customers is not unheard of in business. That's why MS releases a new OS every three years, not because they want to make our lives better.

Pay up or don't get an OS is probably more correct.

The way I see the plan is: move everything to the cloud (centralized computing) making software distribution (high cost) a thing of the past. $queeze that money with both fists.

Do I think you're nuts? All that matters is that I know I'm crazy
    - only crazy people say they're not crazy!

MS has a Fairy Dairy land a Farmville - who knew? Sounds as though they're trying to muscle in on Disney.

    Hope you're doing well Tony,

    Bill

Not too bad thank you Bill, still loads of pain depending on which way the wind blows which may or may not show in my posts. I don't mind the pay every three years or so for an OS, office suite, map programs etc. I do mind renting stuff. I can also choose to skip a generation if I want too. I feel this subscription the way they are going, at least in the consumer market. Of course the free OS sells your very soul to the marketers. I am not kidding about drivers either. The manufacturers have to pay to have the drivers OKed by M$ so why not pass on the costs to the user if the OS becomes a subscription. You could have a functional driver for web browsing and general purpose for free and a game or higher power OS (with all the aero effects) being a paid for model. Why not, we pay for our add on tools and gizmo like Winamp Pro, Goldwave etc? OK maybe I meant to say the M$ account is tied to a credit card or debit card. Just think if you were late paying they could only let you log on their er I mean your computer to pay the bill. To far fetched. I don't think so. Just be careful what we are unleashing here, we can either choose to tame the monster or let it loose.

Once you lose a Right, it is (probably) gone forever.

Even in the US, Politicians and Corporations are fundamentally opposed to:
    • Freedom of Association
    • Freedom of Exchange
    • Freedom of Movement
    • Free Speech

They want total control over what you can buy, where you can go, what you can say and who you can say it to.

    Hi there

What's wrong with some people here?. Seems once people sit behind a keyboard all business sense goes completely out of their heads.

Absolutely nothing wrong in designing a "World domination 99" OS if it really does what it says on the tin (or Disc!). Domination doesn't mean that you HAVE to use it. However if I were designing and selling something I'd want to "Dominate" the market -- of course any sensible business wants to.

(Judging by almost ANY Countries govt's I.T projects - would you like your next OS to be designed by your Govt !!! If it would even boot you would probably have to wait until year 3000 (a W3K project perhaps), it would be grossly over budget and traditional computers would have long disappeared from the scene).

As for the Touch enabled parts of the OS -- Think of say Blind people - so proper braille screens can be created -- probably much easier to design from the "new GUI" than from the old desktop GUI.

What about parts of the business that rely on scanners and hand held devices (For example RF devices in increasingly automated warehouses - these scan straight into back end systems like say SAP Extended Warehouse Facility, or energy service agents who use these devices to read utility meters etc.

Even for normal desktop users Touch CAN be useful in some instances too.

Buying Train / Plane tickets is often much easier via Touch -- I can say do it on a Touch laptop, the Bar code is sent to my phone and at the Rail / Plane check in the bar code is read from the phone by a Scanner at the check in. -

Quick / seamless - one common application whether on a phone or computer - for booking it's usually easier for me to use a computer (phone screens are often too small when selecting from a choice of options) or I want to compare prices so a touch computer is brilliant - just slide the pages when needed and the touch drop downs for selections are great.

Travel apps are used ALL the time in business and any way of automating these and speeding them up saves a great deal of TIME and MONEY !!.

By having a common OS that can handle all these devices means that you don't need the unnecessary expense of having teams of expensive people designing "Interfaces" so these devices can integrate with company back end or office systems.

I'm all in favour of incorporating new facilities into an OS - and increasingly even at work we don't just use ONE type of device but SEVERAL different ones and if they can easily integrate with each other so much the better.

The main gripe was originally with W8 that the change was much to brutal - businesses are essentially very conservative when it comes to changing the way people work -- they have to be spoon fed gradually rather like a young baby. However once the devices and technology becomes more mainstream they will say "Why didn't we do that much earlier".

A recent example is in the use of SSD's. Even as little as 18 months ago there were posts all over the Forums saying they were unreliable and would never catch on. I can't think of ONE single user who ever regretted using an SSD.

    Cheers

The trouble comes when OS stands for Oppression System rather than Operating System.
