I have to ask - what drivers are being used in Device Manager for the various listed USB host controllers?

Look in Properties, in General, Driver, Details and Events Tabs?

I have no problems with using and ejecting USB drives, and have upgraded on this path:

    10074->10240->10525->10532->10547->10565, no clean install.

I did make sure that all the Intel chipset drivers were upgraded from Microsoft generic to Intel in 10240, and that the Intel (R) drivers were in place in each subsequent update, and have migrated OK.

I have an AMD laptop (HP/Compaq Presario u/g to Windows 8.1) that point blank will not load the latest Catalyst AMD drivers, and if I individually force update ("have disk" and point to the driver location) the USB filter drivers to AMD, complains that it is "not recommended" because "Windows cannot verify compatibility with your hardware" - but the installation completes OK - Windows driver certificate and all. At some future time Windows will rollback to a generic MS USB driver. Frustrating.

Mine comes up under Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - all MS drivers dated this build (10565)...

In searching Feedback, I found this one, which struck me as funny, although I'm sure it's not funny to the OP!

"Build 10565 now says I can safely eject 2 of my hard drives?! I don't think I want to eject a TB WD Black drive or my 4 GB WD Red drive I use for file history. This is odd."

    Yep, it is odd!

So, regardless of whether you may think I may be a little off balance, at least I have a lot of company in the Feedback Group.

Simple solution (but I still shouldn't have to do this!)

I can go into This PC, locate the Flash Drive, right click on it and then click on Eject. Works, but still way too many clicks! So, I drag the Flash Drive to my QuickLaunch Bar (circa XP or Vista), create a shortcut and voila! it lives there. I right click on the shortcut, then click on Eject and I can now safely remove the Flash Drive.

This still isn't a true solution; it's merely a workaround to something that should just work. Especially since there are only two USB ports on the front of my desktop and I have two external HDDs plus USB sticks.

Wyn, did you look in Event Viewer/Applications to see what was holding onto your drive? Mine clearly showed Defender as the culprit.

Lin, it doesn't show me anything at all in Event Viewer. I'll look again, but I've already looked until my eyes are bloody.

Mine showed these 2 processes locking the drive as Kernel-PnP warnings in Event Viewer..

The application System with process id 4 stopped the removal or ejection for the device USB\VID_059F&PID_100C\00D04B8713027B66.

I don't know what this can be.

The application \Device\HarddiskVolume9\Windows\System32\svchost.exe with process id 732 stopped the removal or ejection for the device USB\VID_059F&PID_100C\00D04B8713027B66.

From here this turned out to be the Distributed Link Tracking Client Service - its locks disappear in Process Explorer if this service is ended but still can't eject as System is still locking the drive.

HUGE apologies, Wyn. The warnings were in System NOT Applications.

Ok, now that I've found it, what do I do with it? :)

That is normal if his BIOS enabled Hot Sata connections. It can be useful in certain circumstances.
