The last one I did (last week) was to migrate an old 10120 VM from VBox to Hyper-V (it lost activation obviously), enter the old generic key to activate it and then upgrade to 10240. I then stopped getting insider builds. It is now permanently activated and has never seen a qualifying license. Of course the activation might get revoked in future - who knows.
This is the type of thing I was thinking about and it continues to interest me.

I would be very interested in your results, WhyMe.

Since I have no computers that qualify, my only recourse is to find someone who does. And, you seem to be the perfect candidate.

So, will you please let us know whether you succeed in getting one of these computers into the program? It will be much appreciated.
Darn it. I like to delegate guinea-pigs. I don't like being one lol
And of course I'll post back with my results. Though it may be a while as I'm working on another couple of projects atm and need to complete them before embarking on something new.

Just got hold of a build 10130_x64 iso.

Going to see if I can use it to turn my old, unused and lonely XP desktop into Win10 Pro 10240. It'll be sometime next week when I get the time though.

I understand that is the consumer upgrade path but is that still the same answer if I was to load Win10 via the insider program? I know that some people running preview builds have ended up with fully active Win10 consumer builds without any expiration date. Although that was for older builds pre July 29...

ps Edited my previous post to make sure my question was 100% clear :)
Vista is irrelevant. It is not a qualifying OS. Any attempt to upgrade to 10, preview or RTM, will result in a message that your version of Windows is not supported. Sell it on eBay.

Yeah I've got that and I stuck it up on a ebay a couple of days ago (I'm hoping it'll pay for a whopper meal). I'm now going a different route to achieve my target.

I'm going to be using my freshly downloaded 10130 iso to hopefully activate a 10240 Win10 Pro build on my old XP machine. Don't know if I'll be successful. But that is the goal.

I'm waiting to see if Microsoft will actually let you join the XP machine to the Insider Program. The Expiry date for Build 10130 is October 2, 2015.

10130 expires October 2nd and stops booting a couple of weeks later.

Edit: Now I'm typing this, it is closer than I thought. Need to pull my finger out
