Windows 10 Will Kill The Installation DVD, Finally

DVD media might be cheap but a little bit of dust etc on the DVD itself or the reader and you've got a Coaster. I know you can get really cheap external DVD devices for those machines that don't have a DVD reader any more - but the only use I have for that now is for Ripping DVD's to HDD so I can stream them with my media streamer when I want to watch them (also works for Blu Ray too at full 1080p HD). I haven't purchased a physical CD for YEARS now either !!! - the sort of music I like I can get quite easily in FLAC format (uncompressed) without problem. I ripped my old CD collection a while back too.
USB sticks can fail but it's much rarer. Good move IMO for Ms -- Unless your computer is REALLY old you will be able to boot from a USB device. Even Protected boot machines can do this -- just disable the protected boot in the BIOS -- however for Windows installation Ms might make the USB device bootable even with protected boot enabled.

I remember, about 20 years ago, just before or at the beginning of the computer CD, installing Ami Pro Office Suite from a set of 30 - 1.44-mb floppy discs. Ouch. You would get through 27 or 28 and then have a read error. Ahhhhhhhhh! Solid state media is sooooooo much better.
That is what killed OS/2. It wasn't available preloaded on machines. PCs did not come standard with CDROM. Many times the fix was to reinstall it. After installing it once from diskette customers would chuck it if you told them to install again.
Installing it from CD was a breeze.

Micro SD would work for me. At least with a SD card you can make it read only if you want.

How about windows on micro-SD?
I wonder how many Commodore 64 cassette-tapes it would take to install Windows 10?
Too bad Microsoft won't offer Windows 10 on a Zip drive. Of course if you ever had to reinstall it, the Zip drive would be dead, as usual.
I wonder why(probably cost I guess) they don't have default drivers for the device in firmware like some USB Printers? If no driver found install the minimal support driver for the current OS from the firmware. Then once you have the system up you can download the optimized latest code etc..

Having posted this article, I find myself ordering the DVD today because the store where I ordered from didn't give a definite release date for the USB version.

That is irony at its best :)
Still you'll be able to make your on USB drives of 64 and 32 bit and with a little bit of fiddling Home and Pro.

There used to be something called "Universal printer driver", I don't know why it disappeared.

My HP Printers have the driver onboard, You can install it from the printer when you plug the USB cable in. It's stored in flash memory in the device. It's updateable too with a utility from HP, just like updating the firmware. I think I only ever used it once when I did the initial WIFI setup on my wireless Laserjet. Now all I do is turn it on and Windows finds it and installs the drivers in the background.
