Reporting and would like to share 5 machines’ information that I have:
    1. Asus Desktop 8.1 Pro x64/10 Pro x64
    2. HP Tablet 7 Pro x86/10 Pro x86
    3. Hanspree Netbook 7 Starter x86/10 Home x86
    4. Asus Notebook 8.1 HP x64/10 Home x64
    5. Acer AIO 7 HP x64/10 Home x64
None of them was succeeded first through GWT automatic upgrade (All failed in the middle of somewhere with issue), but they all passed with ESD/ISO installations, activated and after 2 days they’re all working fine.

Can you imagine what would have happened with Windows 8 if the Insider Program had been initiated at the time Windows 8 started to be tested? With those same journalists and authors mentioned above, I'd hazard a guess that the final product would have become a much better Windows 8. And, I'd even bet the journalists would have had a much better outlook on the final product.
IMO, the issue wasn't the number of testers, it was MS' outright refusal to accept any criticism of their new GUI.

From the time W8DP was released users told MS that the new GUI was going to cause issues.

It wasn't a formal testing like Insider program with W10 but even early Alpha W8 was available thru various channels. I installed and tested it very early but had many more problems with it that with 10. Had to skip testing for couple of months because it managed to wipe out my other disk that had W7 on it. Later on it wasn't as much of touch and go.

    Hi there

Yesterday upgraded W8.1 machine and W7 machine -- both worked and activated successfully.

I used the original TECHNET ISO's and Serial numbers (W8.1 Pro (VL) and W7 Ultimate Retail) I had to CLEAN RE-INSTALL the OS's and then after updating I got immediate prompts would you like to upgrade to W10.

(I'd been running Insider build 10240 on these machines so I wiped them. I now need these machines for "Proper" or Daily work --still remaining as an Insider on other hardware though).

The W7 install was a bit of a fuddle as my hardware was far newer than when W7 was released and it took nearly an extra 1GB of downloads to update it properly.

I didn't install any programs apart from the Ms default stuff on both systems.

Update and activation 100% OK -- added my own applications -- as the original installs were "clean enough" I am just keeping the updated systems. I used both the W8.1 and W7 original systems as the keys had never been used before and were still valid.

If you have old TechNet keys -- these are STILL valid and you can move to different systems - just like retail - although if you exceed the limit you can re-activate by phone.

Note - installing W10 do NOT enter any product keys on upgrade from previous OS and previous OS MUST BE ACTIVATED and have latest updates applied.

    Hint:

I also tested this on a VM using a W8 Pro VL licence --if it failed I didn't want to waste W8.1 and W7 licences - but it didn't-- if you haven't got the actual ISO's you can usually find clean ISO's (not the Pre-activated ones') from various sites. So long as it's not Pre-activated the TechNet key will activate the OS and you can then get the W10 upgrade.

I've put this info here as some people might still have valid keys but don't have the original ISO's so IMO this isn't "Pirating" as you've got a PAID licence whether by TechNet or Retail.

    Cheers

I'm sorry if I gave the wrong impression, but the call and service cost nothing.

The cost was for a proposed safety service to stop the problem recurring.
Please understand this: Microsoft has no such product, safety service costing hundreds of AU dollars! The number you called, an Australian Freecall number 1800 951 723 belongs to a company called Microzite as you can see by yourself on this page: Microzite.com.au | Help and Support For Microsoft Contact us . Their use of Microsoft's name is unauthorized and they have nothing to do with Microsoft.

This company is notoriously known for being one of the worst scammers online. Later you told you checked this number by calling Microsoft and heard the number "being under Microsoft's umbrella". That simply is not true! The number belongs to scammers.

Please believe what our esteemed geeks have been trying to tell you. Call Microsoft offices, check the real phone numbers on this official MS Australia page, and ask again: Microsoft Australia | Office Locations

They tell you you have been scammed, and give you the correct contact information for MS Australia support.

Probably no help, but I would suggest you download the Media Creation Tool to the desktop affected and instead of burning to disk, run the tool and choose Update this PC. Since nothing else has worked, it's worth a try.
FWIW... I did both. Got ISO. Got USB stick. Upgraded 8.1 ---> 10. Burned disc. Did clean, really clean install. Now running dual boot 10 as insider and "public" RTM. All is fine.... slick, fast, just good!

I tried the Win 10 iso file download yesterday. I chose the "both" option (32 & 64 bit). I further chose the iso to DVD option. Win 10 does not have a "burner" (it reports no burner found). Have yet to test a 32bit or 64bit install using this iso.
