My 8.1 Pro was a Full Retail version and I have been issued a Windows 10 Pro Key which product key vbs program found for future installs if needed.
I'm pretty sure that key is not a Win 10 retail license key, and that is of no utility for future installs.

I followed the path described for the free Win 10 upgrade: I installed it as an upgrade over an installed, and activated, Windows 8.1. (I found that it did not activate unless I chose to "keep everything".) After that, I did a clean install from a USB drive, deleting the partitions from the boot drive in the process. I skipped entering a key. The resulting Win 10 activated online.

I didn't try using the key from the original Win 10 installation. I did that in the past with one of the later preview builds, and the key wasn't accepted for installation, much less activation.

If someone cold tell me that the Win 10 key from an installation created by the free upgrade is anything more than a generic placeholder, the same for everyone, I'd be pleased to know it.

OK on my 2nd main machine which dual boot 7 Ultimate and 8.1 Pro with Media Center I downloaded the media creation install tool and ran set up from 8.1 desktop. The setup warned me Media Center would be removed. I kept files and programs and let it get on with it. About 45 mins later (it was a fully loaded OS with loads of programs) I was running 10 Pro with dual booting 7 Ultimate with nothing messed up on the dual booting side. 10 Pro was not activating but it did download a DVD player. After a couple of hours it was activated. I had looked around and could only think it was an overloaded server. My 8.1 Pro was a Full Retail version and I have been issued a Windows 10 Pro Key which product key vbs program found for future installs if needed.
All my 4 PC's have the same generic key. Google the last 5 characters from your key and see what shows up. I think you'll find its not a unique key. You may even see a link back to 10 Forums in the search results.

I have typed this command in Command Prompt slmgr /xpr and the box pops up saying you are permanently activated. Does this mean I no longer need home version? So MS decided to give me Pro version instead of Home due to me being an insider. Is this official? What if I need to clean install Windows 10. Which ISO will I need Windows 10 pro right?
Is this official? Nothing official of which I am aware. Is it perhaps a glitch in the activation process for situations specifically like yours? Probably. If you ever get to the point where you feel everything is really terrible and you need a clean install, I would try a RESET first. If you do decide to do a clean install, I would use the Pro version, to remain the same as how the system was activated. However, your best bet is to make images (using Macrium Reflect Free or some similar program), so this never becomes an issue.

Just out of curiosity, check your key and see if it ends in 66t (do not post the key here)

No its not official, not that I know of. I upgraded from Windows 8.1 Core via the insiders page and got 10 Home. Read my other post for more info. IMHO, he got Pro as a result of a glitch that slipped through the cracks. I suspect he upgraded via a downloaded ISO, not via the Insiders page.

You're probably right. I did the same - used an Insider's ISO. But I clean installed from 9926 and upgraded all the way through to 10240. I am permanently activated with a generic key. But I plan on staying an as Insider on this machine, so I'm not going to bother with an upgrade.

Remember for Windows 8/8.1, Media Center was an optional add-on that you either got for free (I did) when you upgraded to 8 within the first 30 days of release, or you had to purchase it through the Windows Store. Which leads to another question... if I purchased the App, and now Win 10 is dumping it, do you get your money back or a store credit? To me you should, but...

My post was and is nothing else than a subjective, personal opinion of mine regarding your quite clear statement that you think you should get your money back :)
I thought I was clear, even if you didn't see it

Have a good one Kari :)

@sygnus21, I stand corrected. I blame English not being my native language; I occasionally miss something. That's my story and I am sticking to it!

    My experience.

Went to MS download web site and got 'create media for W10' link. Successfully downloaded ISO image of W10 Pro 64bit and burnt to disc.

1st PC upgraded W10 Pro over W7 Ult no problem, with roll back to 7 if needed. Retained all settings, programs, data, etc. Got a product code key using ProduKey. Made a backup image and then did a test clean reinstall using ProduKey and all good.

2nd PC, tried to upgrade W8.1 Pro to W10, retaining all programs, files, etc.

Downloaded heap of updates, and got as far as 70% installed, then failed to reboot. Repair failed, and auto rolled back to W8.1 Pro. Time elapsed about 2 hours.

Tried 3 more times over next 24 hours with same result. Followed a link to MS tech support off error message. Allowed MS techo to take control of my PC. He said my internet data was being hacked by China location. He offered to fix it for one month at $299, or 12 months for $500.

I declined, and phoned my ISP tech support. They said my data was not being hacked, and went on to say they had received a number of complaints from people around Australia experiencing the same problem ... ie specifically getting to about 70% and hanging.

A short while later the MS techo phoned me back and said they had fixed the problem for free for one month, but strongly suggested I get permanent protection by paying the $500. The free call MS help phone No in Aussie was: 1800 757 069 .

So I tried again for the 4th time, and same result, only this time reboot failed at 45% ... despite being told the problem had been fixed by MS.

    Comments please?
