One way or another the cloud is here to stay. It's not going away. I use Google Drive to back up my key files and data and it's served me well. Using this is like having an off site storage in case everything goes nuts.

This concept is preached and followed by many businesses and I had to do this when I worked at The Travelers and GE.

if they could guarantee me that it will always be there for me, then i might consider using it for non essential things. but i wouldn't put really important stuff on there, ever. i don't trust that it is for my eyes only, and don't trust that they won't take what they want from it. who can determine if they are or aren't easily looking at anything you put there?
I am with you on this. I only place stuff on The Cloud storage sites that I don't care if it gets lost. If a hacker can get into The Pentagon they can get into OneDrive.

absolutely! then, i added this late on my other comment, but just to reiterate:

also, they give me free 100gb today, and six months from now it expires, then what about all of the information i had on there?? it would have to be a guarantee like google photos, that it will always be there. and even though i don't trust that guarantee from google, at least it is written. but no matter what, i wouldn't put any sensitive information on any cloud software. the lack of control just is too risky for my tastes.

I use the cloud for temporary storage of non-critical files when I do something like re-partition drives.

Cloud is best used for "On the road" stuff, when you have to have things at other places than your computer. I use it to shuffle files to and from phone because I can't find driver for it.

I am with you all the way - my files stay on my machine, under my control.

CLOUD refers to a fluffy thing that's here one moment and there the next. Not the rock solid reference I'd choose for a place to store important data. Now THE ROCK, as Alcatraz was referred to, would be a great name.

Cloud ? Rock? - Cloud ? Rock? - Cloud ? Rock? - I gotta go with the Rock thing, but I still wouldn't use it...:)

Thank you. (I have been called The Rock for about the last 40 years.)

So what happens to your 400 GB of data on 2/9/2017 or 6/28/206 when the "bonus space" is no longer valid. Do you lose the space (and data), do you have to pay to keep it?

Good question. It stays in your acct. You just can't add anymore to it. Don't get me wrong, from a security perspective, I get why someone wouldn't want to use a cloud. But, you see all that space I use? It's only a backup of a backup, so if my hard drive failed, i'd have a backup. I don't put sensitive info in it like passwords or banking info. That's just common sense. Use it wisely and it'll work wonders for convenience. That convenience of always having my background/lockscreen photos, music on every device like my phone and SP3, docs like user manuals receipts without card info, etc. will be more than useful to access anywhere and everywhere should I need it. Especially these times with testing 10, i've learned how convenient things are not having to worry about wiping local storage on my machines and my phone in testing new builds. I never worry about local storage anymore except for my phone for video recording which I can use an sd card to expand.

So what if it expires? I have over 2000 Bing points to keep extending my use of a hundred gb's for years to come. If I run out, I don't mind paying a few bucks to have the convenience of an online backup with non-sensitive info.
