There are many reasons people wanted to do clean installs instead of upgrade, no matter what M$ preferred. The bottom line is it must comes to a reasonable solution when M$ release the official build. Aren't our Insider Previewers are VIPs?
You can clean install if you want to after you do the free upgrade on or after the 29th. Microsoft have said so. You upgrade so Microsoft can verify you have a genuine qualifying OS installed. That's all.

Microsoft wanted as many upgrade installs from people running the preview so they could test it out. You could still, and many did, clean install. Especially if they had issues after doing an upgrade. I was in that group. I did a couple of upgrades that then had issues. I then started over with a clean install to get rid of the issues. Some never ever did an upgrade install. No big deal except! If you clean install the Preview there is no record of your qualifying OS for the final free upgrade to the final release. Those who did that don't get the free ride to the fully activated final release.

If this is true (my bold) then would anyone who clean installed the Technical Preview need to put back their original Windows 7/8.1 on their system in order to get the GWX upgrade offer icon back? If you don't and wait until after 29th July and then put your original OS back, will the upgrade icon still show up again?

I've upgraded two rigs and clean installed two others. All are activated! I don't see how the activation status of the two clean installed rigs may change. I guess who already activated their copies, no matter how, are fine.

    Hi,

This is my 1st post here. Been using the Windows 10 Pro Insider preview builds for a couple of weeks now. The OS was upgraded via the ISO as an in-place upgrade. Since then I have managed to clean install build 10240 2-3 times on the same machine and the OS was activated automatically, using both a local and MS account.

Have a few issues with the task scheduler but I'll post that bit in the relevant thread.

Those that clean installed the preview will, IMHO, have to go back and install 7/8.1 to get the free upgrade. I could be wrong but based on what I've read, that my opinion. If you opt out of the Insider Preview Program, which is what you do to go to the final non Preview build, you are subject to the conditions of the free upgrade offer just like everybody else. One of the conditions is you have to upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1. You don't need the GWX icon/App to get the free upgrade. You can do it without that App, You just may have to wait a while for you chance to do it. Those that reserved their upgrade with the GWX App get priority that's all. It's not mandatory.

Did you run that retail demo thing? Windows 10 has a secret retail demo mode with a new app and video loop
