Not sure what's meant 'if you're upgrading from windows 7 at this stage as I didn't think that uSoft were rolling out that option until 29 July.

I upgraded from a trial version of Windows 10 Enterprise 10166 & would expect to be able to activate build 10240 for use until it's declared expiry.
I upgraded from Windows 7 to Insider preview 10074 originally via the insiders web site. You always had the option to upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1 instead of doing a clean install. Microsoft actually encouraged you to do the upgrade. That's why ISO's are so hard to find. Then I updated to each new build that came out via Windows update.

There are many reasons people wanted to do clean installs instead of upgrade, no matter what M$ preferred. The bottom line is it must comes to a reasonable solution when M$ release the official build. Aren't our Insider Previewers are VIPs?

I'm pretty sure most of us here discussing windows 10 are FANS, not necessarily trying to a save a cost of version of new Windows. Made us hard during upgrading should not be the best interest of M$.

    two things:
    1. ComputerWorld article definitely said that Win10 Updates will BEGIN on July 29th but will be STAGGERED for up to a month for those who wish to upgrade for free. Who's on First? I Donno.

    2. I have always done a clean install when loading in a new MS OS. This will be the FIRST TIME I will skip this. I have my computer running well, all my programs work, and I know how to clean up a drive so not much left over bits and pieces in reg and drives to worry about. Dropping out of the insider program also will seem a waste since I came from a valid Win8.1 Pro OS. So I will just continue as is. As long as I get a valid Win10 Pro license that is!

    b10162 to b10240

I had some weird issues during the journey to b10240.

I converted a W10 b10162 VM to an Online Account.
After "jumping through the hoops" my mouse buttons stopped working (the pointer was OK).
    A reboot fixed the issue.

About 12 hrs later I was offered the b10240 Upgrade.

After it "finished", my mouse stopped working.
It was "fun" trying to set the install options using the keyboard.
I was offered the chance to disable some Apps during the final setup.
A reboot fixed the mouse issue.

    On my PC:
    • The pinned Taskbar & Start Menu Tile Pane items survived unscathed
    • The hacked theme (coloured Titlebars) also survived

I can't make the Start Menu Tile Pane thinner than 4 medium tile widths.
I can freely adjust the height though.

This version uses as much RAM as my "real" W7 install does (~1.2 GB).

It does seem to be running smoothly. :)

Unless it changed and I miss it, you'll have the option of a clean install via ISO once you've upgraded and are in Win 10.

I suspect it'll be staggered by region, starting with North America then Europe and so on.

It might not happened on yours, but others.
    Name few:
    1. it restarts slower than earlier builds with no explanation.
    2. It is not friendly with 1024x600 tablets (M$ promised).
    3. It doesn't work well with dual cameras.
    4. It crashes some native Apps.
    ....

    Not too bad though! LOL.
