Not sure what's meant 'if you're upgrading from windows 7 at this stage as I didn't think that uSoft were rolling out that option until 29 July.

I upgraded from a trial version of Windows 10 Enterprise 10166 & would expect to be able to activate build 10240 for use until it's declared expiry.
    I initially upgraded from 10166.

I prepared an .iso from the .esd, re-installed 8.1, and ran the upgrade to 10240. (I prefer to not stack upgrades.) The result is activated.

I'd wager that its behavior is exactly like that of the retail upgrade of 7/29, even if it ends up not being the same build.

msa is a microsoft account. you need that, of course. but it is definitely worth putting the old drive back in. macrium is a free program you can download, and it can make a full copy of your windows ten on the old drive that you upgraded. then you take the old drive back out, and put the new ssd back in. load any copy of windows on it, and then download macrium again. once macrium is installed, just restore the image and viola, you have your upgraded windows 10 on your ssd, and it only took a few hours. where if you go your route, it could take a very long time before you ever get your windows 10 upgrade.
sorry, i'm doing ten things at the same time. actually, you can just leave win 10 on the ssd. and there is no need to load a new os on it. after making the macrium copy on the old hdd, just put the ssd back in, and run macrium on your currrent os. then restore the image of the upgraded one from the old hdd. then you are good to go. no need to downgrade.

Thanks for your replies. I will try that surely, any guide here how to use macrium to create an image. I should've done this when I had Windows 10 installed on old drive, I couple of hours ago created an image of Windows 10 build 10240 :) on SSD. Stupid mistake I made.

Use this tutorial and also create a recovery disk (PE5).

Woah. Updated both PC and laptop to 10240 from 10166, and both came out identically broken.
Settings app doesn't open, right-click desktop and choosing Display Settings says it "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action (ms-settings:display)", the little window that opens with "Save as" doesn't show up and the program freezes, SFC /ScanNow says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix someof them." (I've ran it three times), with a ENORMOUS CBS.log.

The only thing that I didn't do is that DISM method, but I'm unsure because the ISO I have is the 10162 I guess, and I don't know if it would be compatible or finish destroying this system.

Is it a known issue or have I just got unlucky?

Well, I hate to say this, but 10166 was much more stable than 10240 for me. sfc unfixable corruptions, hang on waking from sleep. Sigh.

I am taking an advice from you guys here and using Packard bell recovery tool to restore Windows 7 to factory reset. I am going to miss Windows 10 . Once Original windows 7 is installed I will then update to Windows 10 insider build. Show key tool will show me Product code right which was used in Windows 10 after that right?
Why? Once you have upgraded and activated the final version, you can clean install as many times as you like, and it will activate.
