Windows 10 Build 10240 for PC is now available

    I done a clean install on my machine that was setup for w10 only virgin drives no w7 etc on it I am at this stage still activated does this mean I will loose this I am a windows insider

    No.. just go into the advanced options of Update and you can check if you're still in the insider program and if not you can set it up again. I just did with no issue.

    So, if I understand you correctly: you initially did a clean install as an Insider - you did not upgrade a w7 or w8 machine. Your w10 OS is currently activated. I believe as long as you stay in the Insiders program, you will remain activated. If you decide to opt out, you will need to install a qualifying OS and upgrade to w10, or buy a w10 license.

    Well, what's the use of insider ring if not to get upgrades, use them, report on them and all of that before others do ?

    Microsoft is currently focused on the release of Windows, meaning patching system breaking bugs and driver issues immediately instead of using the ring system, plus clean reinstalls are still problematic . We will get new previews once the upgrade settles down.

    It implies the Insider program will continue, without real changes or new builds, until just before the October 15th deadline for the insider builds to expire. They are encouraging insiders to upgrade, report back on problems and help them improve the upgrade process as well as tie down any bugs they find from their telemetry. If some of those upgrades fail, then there will be further attempts to reinstall etc, adding to the data accrued.

    It's like any honeymoon period, and the 3 months from July 15 - October 15 will give a good shot at exploring all the ins and outs, working out compatibility issues, and understanding what we like or not about Windows 10 so far. There will also be a good number of virgin OEM Windows 10 and some retail fresh installs on very new hardware entering the fray, shaping the course of future progress for the Windows development teams.

    Nobody is forcing you. Not Microsoft, not anyone else. You have the choice and you do as you prefer. The "rules" were made incredibly clear already before the launch:

     1. Activation status after July 29th

    ("Windows 10 remains activated" in below list means it remains activated on the device in question.)

    • A clean installed Windows 10 Insider Preview
      • User remains as an Insider opting in for the upgrades, Windows 10 will remain activated until the user opts out
      • User opts out from the upgrade builds, Windows 10 will no longer be activated. User needs to install a qualifying valid OS and in-place upgrade or buy a Windows 10 license for a clean install

    • An in-place upgraded Windows 10 Insider Preview, upgraded from a qualifying valid 7 or 8.1
      • User remains as an Insider opting in for the upgrades, Windows 10 will remain activated
      • User opts out from the upgrade builds, Windows 10 will remain activated for the lifetime of the device because the qualifying OS was valid

    • An in-place upgraded Windows 10 Insider Preview, upgraded from a non-valid 7 or 8.1
      • User remains as an Insider opting in for the upgrades, Windows 10 will remain activated until the user opts out, being in the sense of activation and license the same as a clean installed Windows 10 Insider Preview
      • User opts out from the upgrade builds, Windows 10 will no longer be activated. User needs to install a qualifying valid OS and in-place upgrade or buy a Windows 10 license for a clean install

    (Red font: only option for those who upgraded from a non-valid 7 or 8.1 to keep the free Windows 10.)
