I've always taken the free upgrade "life of the device" to mean how long a user keeps the same system, that is motherboard etc. if you are a self-builder, or a system if you buy complete systems. I think if MS is using an approximate 2-4 years as "life of device" for accounting purposes that would be about correct for most situations. I have an Intel Core i7 920 system that is nearing six years of age (but still does what I need at the moment) and I will likely rebuild within two years, if not next year. When I do rebuild the Win 10 free upgrade license will end and I'll buy Win 10 Pro to install on the new SSD. I was still able to use Win 10 free for a year or more. I don't see a problem here as the author of the article clearly does.

    Hi there

people like Forbes and above all GARTNER (surprised they are still in business) should be TOTALLY IGNORED -- their predictions are invariably suspect -- Random guessing would lead to very similar outcomes -- possibly with Random Guessing winning by a small margin.

Lifetime of a device can mean many things -- I have some old gear that's nearly 30 years old and STILL WORKS -- so presumably if W10 runs on equipment that will last for 50 years or so then W10 will still be FREE on that device.

Even if W10 support ends down the line you can always run VM's on old legacy hardware.

I'm still running STUDIO VINYL record cutting equipment on an XP VM which will outlast my W7 stuff !!!!.
Don't create problems (or even anticipate them) when none actually exist.

    Cheers
    jimbo

Am I the only one going to mention Windows XP? I feel confident that Windows 10 will be supported for a LONG time, especially since Microsoft intends 10 to be their final OS (or at bare minimum the conclusion for all their work)

It's not just free, it's open source at least up to the 29. I guess that the Insider release will still be available for free after the end of the mount.

You received the source code for Windows 10? That'll silence all those Linux fans.

(I forget. What color text indicates sarcasm?)

Microsoft did say it MAY go open source, emphasis on the MAY.

How come you choose to keep running XP, and rather than Win7?
