Microsoft realigns phone business, cuts 7,800 jobs

    Posted: 08 Jul 2015

Today Microsoft announced major changes to its phones business, one that it only got into in earnest a short while ago with the acquisition of Nokia's phones business. With the the "realignment", Microsoft will cut some 7,800 jobs, write down some $7.6 billion dollars "related to assets associated with the acquisition of the Nokia Devices and Services (NDS) business in addition to a restructuring charge of approximately $750 million to $850 million".

This is pretty common, when they acquire a new company, they lay off any overlap in employees.. sometimes it's from the new company, sometimes from the old...

    Hi there

Providing we can take away some of the obvious sorrow of people losing jobs -- from a purely business sense you have to ask what on earth or rather HOW on earth does it take 7,500 people to run a Phones manufacturing business --what exactly DO these people all do all day.

Technology requires different working methods to traditional ways -- a lot of technology can replace those jobs that are lost anyway -- creating software, servicing "Virtual branches" etc etc.

I see squeals of crocodile tears nearly every day in various Left wing newspapers about Banks closing branches (mind you if people really were that left wing why on earth would they choose to work in a bank anyway) --yet who really goes INTO a branch bank any more -- unless you are paying in wads of Cash (coins etc) more and more people are using MOBILES for Banking.

What Ms needs to do to get Windows phone off the ground is to find some way the Windows phone OS can run on popular models such as SAMSUNGS / HTC etc. The Nokia phones arte basically old fashioned junk -- equivalent in architectural terms to the old Stalinist Eastern Bloc "Brutalist" types of concrete monstrosities that passed for City planning.

    Cheers

    Hi there

as I posted previously --it's always bad for people losing jobs - new ones will be created --but exactly HOW and WHY did it need 7,800 people to run essentially a phone company making just a few handsets that machines could manufacture.

    Cheers

My dear native Finland will be hit hardest. About 2,300 of those 7,800 employees this concerns are from Microsoft Finland, Finnish media tells today, leaving only 1,200 employees for MS Finland.

Those who have to go are all old Nokia employees MS got when they bought the phone business.

    Hi Kari

I'm still confused as to why a company making Phones would actually NEED nearly 8,000 people !!!! - Sorry people are losing jobs but new jobs (often ones that NEVER existed a year or two earlier) are often created -- and a lot of people who get made redundant often start something totally new with surprisingly successful results - so it's not always a bad thing for people to move on.

    Cheers

They had too many models in the lineup for people to really relate to. I think this is a good way to trim off excess redundant jobs and eliminate model confusion with all the different ones they have around the world.

I've been saying this for a long time and it's good that they're finally getting rid of all this confusion.

You have to consider there are a lot of parts in a phone. You need design engineers, semiconductor engineers, people to design the look and feel of the device, plastics engineers, model makers, production line supervisors, and then all the people that actually put the parts together (assuming they're not just manufactured in China).

Then you have software engineers (remember, Nokia phones had their own OS devision), application developers as well... program managers, middle managers, Marketing people, sales people (not the same thing as marketing), account managers, accountants, purchasers/buyers for things you aren't building yourself, or for materials you need to build it yourself, etc...

The list goes on and on.. it's very easy to get 8000 people in a worldwide company that does business in virtually every country in the world. Think about how many Lawyers along they must need

What they need, is to put names to the models, instead of numbers. I like the idea behind naming the Ikon... All other brands of cellphones and tablets have particular model names, or at most version numbers... Galaxy S6 "Edge", LG G4, Moto X, etc...

    Lumia 630 tells me nothing...
