So when you click on a word processor, for example, it is an application, as is that hidden file that runs the printer spooler launched only by the OS. The two programs depend on the OS, whereby the OS itself or your internal BIOS programming are not 'apps' in the technical sense as they communicate directly with the computer hardware itself.
Unless the definition has changed in the past few years, commercial entities like Microsoft and Apple are not using the terms properly, preferring sexy marketing by making the term 'apps' seem like something new and popular in the market, because a "computer program" sounds too 'nerdy' so you are not correct in assuming apps are cloud based only. they are pretty much one in the same. and i'm not sure what is going on with your weather app, but when i click on my weather app, it opens fully in one or two seconds. i just timed it with my phone. it actually opened faster than i could click the stopwatch to stop. lol.

one other thing, for the poster saying that people who wanted color on the title bar should just stick with win 7, that is a ridiculous statement. several posters misunderstood what he was saying. he is not saying he wants the windows 7 environment back, he was just using windows 7 as an example of what we could do when using it. and i agree with him, having allllllllllllllllllllllllllll of the title bars white, is not forward thinking technology. in fact, it appears to be very short sighted. the keys to this system being adopted as the best os worldwide, are security, ability, speed and customization. people want to be able to customize their computers to look and work any way they want. windows 7 got that right, and that is why it is the most popular os ever. it still makes up the highest perscentage of os's worldwide right now, at over 60%. there is a reason for that kind of popularity.

Okay, I admit, my assumptions lack much knowledge.
But, for instance, if the Weather App is native then where are the shortcuts and executables, etc. located?

i assume m$ has that hidden for the time being. but give it some time and that will be revealed as people dig further and further into this os.
for me personally, i don't think i will really start digging into this os, until at least the ga is out. there are way too many changes going on now to waste time with it. and while a lot of things will stay the same, there is just as big a chance that anything can change before then.

When I use a program, I want to be sure that it can do everything I want it to do. If not, I find one that can . . . that's why I pretty much stay out of the Store. Come to think on it, a lot of what's in the Store used to come with Windows.

Maybe he's running an old 286 because I've got Windows 10 on old 1.6ghz Atom PC and it doesn't take that long.

also, there's nothing wrong with apps on a smartphone either. some of the coolest apps i have are on my phone. if i could use them on my computer, i would in a heartbeat.
