    So is the correct?
First, I think that about sums it up. If you do not want to continue as an Insider you have time until the last build you got before opting out expires. At that point you need to revert to you qualifying underlying OS to do the upgrade. When upgraded, you can then afterwards do a clean install if you prefer it. It's just that to get the license, the underlying OS must qualify and a preview build does not do that.

Second, I repeat what I said earlier: Calm down. In worst case scenario you have a year to opt out from the Insider program, revert back to a qualifying OS and upgrade. Even if you so strongly feel that time is running out NOW!, you have time at least until the last build you got before opting out from Insider program expires.

Let's say this 10159 will be the last preview build, although I do not believe it. But let's assume it is; that would give you time to October 2nd to decide:

(Yes you from the wrong side of the big pond, the date in screenshot is October 2nd, not February 10th )

An old school geeks checklist to those suffering from panic attacks:
    • There's no hurry! Really. In other words, calm down!
    • Let the July 29th come, see it by yourself how it goes. There's no hurry!
    • Do not opt out from the Insider program only because you are afraid you will lose your Windows 10 license. There's no hurry!
    • When staying in the program, always check the expiration date for your current build. That's your deadline to revert back to a qualifying OS in case you want to opt out. Come July 28th 2016 and you are still an Insider on your Insider build, go back to your qualifying OS and upgrade if the urge to opt out is simply too much and you will do it, opt out because being an Insider is costing you loads of your hard earned bucks in form of bills from your shrink because you can't take the heat and excitement. But, the ultimate deadline is 56 weeks in the future. There's no hurry!
    • Did I already mention you should calm down, there's no hurry?

A calm, peaceful, tranquil and untroubled (regarding Windows 10) Kari

Please provide a link to a more recent announcement from Microsoft than the blog post quoted in my earlier post.

you can upgrade right from your newest build, and DO NOT need to downgrade back to win 8.1 or 7.
Yes, you have to if you opt out from the Insider program. That has been told quite clearly by Microsoft.

    This might clear things up.

Upcoming changes to Windows 10 Insider Preview builds [UPDATED 6/22] | Blogging Windows

“I want to continue as a Windows Insider!” If you want to continue as a Windows Insider past 7/29 there is nothing you need to do. You’re already opted in and receiving builds in the Fast or Slow ring depending upon your selection. This is prerelease software and is activated with a prerelease key. Each individual build will expire after a time, but you’ll continue to receive new builds so by the time an older prerelease build expires you’ll have received a new one. Since we’re continuing the Windows Insider Program you’ll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program. We provide ISOs for these builds for recovery from any significant problems, but they are still pre-release software. As part of the program we’ll upgrade Insiders to what is for all intents and purposes the same build as what other customers will get on 7/29, but that will be just another build for Insiders, and those who stay in the program will simply get the next build after as well.

“I want to opt out of the Windows Insider Program on 7/29.” If you decide to opt-out of the program and upgrade to the 7/29 build you will be subject to exactly the same terms and conditions that govern the offer* that was extended to all Genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 customers. This is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems. If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license. If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire. .

To me it sounds like if you upgraded from windows 7 or 8.1 to windows 10 preview then upgrade to Windows 10 RTM then you opt out of the insider program and it will remain activated, won't expire and you won't need to roll back. Any other scenario you have to roll back or get a new license.

One unusual thing I came across and I reported it. If upgrading windows 7 sp1 home it upgrades to windows 10 pro preview if you use the downloaded iso image to upgrade and not do a clean install. Build 10130.

I believe you posted the latest blog post, Kari. I was talking to Simrick when I said that; she must have missed the revisions to the original blog post.

As we all know, there is no free upgrade to RTM/GA for Windows Insiders at this time unless they have a qualifying product. Gabe Aul posted to his blog, gave us all hope, then took it back once, then took it back a second time.

As I've said all along, those who have enough Windows 7/8.x to cover their existing computers will get the free upgrade if they choose to. Also, those who choose to remain in the Windows Insider Program will get new builds periodically, and will have Windows 10 until they either drop out or the program ends (not likely).

direct quote. i stand by my earlier statement. no need for panic. almost everyone came from a genuine win 7 or 8, 8.1 os, so why all the panic?

Well some did a clean install, so they would have to roll back or get new license.

Another reason some why some want to roll back is they might want to upgrade from a stable Windows 7.1 or 8.x system to a stable Windows rtm 10 instead of a preview build to a rtm.

I am sure there are other reason why some would want to roll back.

My system actually upgrade from windows 7 home to windows 10 pro preview when using the 10130 iso image which most likely I would have to roll back.

This has all been hashed over and over and over ad infinitem, ad nauseum . . . I'm pretty sure everyone already knows what's required.

No rollback, nor will I have to get a new license. Instead, I will continue with the Insider Program.

When the time comes I will upgrade my Windows 8.1 partition and then do a clean install. I do not want leftover crap from a years old installation of Windows 8.1 Update.

If you have Windows 7 Home Premium, when you upgrade you'll get Windows 10 Home. There's a chart somewhere that tells us what we'll get when we upgrade.

So much time was wasted discussing rollback, licenses, clean installs, etc. Our licenses will not expire on July 29. No need to rush or speculate. Everyone has one full year to find out what the real deal is. If in doubt, stay on Insider until everything is clear. Or just buy a separate license. One thing is for sure. Nothing is FREE. There will only be a trade-off.

Gotta remember that if we remain an Insider that we'll continue to get beta bits; I'm guessing that when we get those that there will be bugs . . . but, if there are no more bugs than I've found so far, I guess I can live with it. :)
