An upgrade from 8.1 Core got me 10 Home, not 10 Pro. If you clean install you get Pro because the ISO is coded to install Pro. The PID.txt file has a Pro key in it.

As for the other post, I meant small businesses not big businesses.

The Insider ISO has a PID.txt file with a Pro key in it. It's supposed to give you Pro on a clean install and save you from having to enter a key. Normal install media would not have a PID.txt file, delete it and see what happens. I did the online upgrade via the insiders page from 8.1 Core and got 10 Home.

EDIT: The PID.txt file is in the sources folder.

EDIT: No.2 Just noticed, the product code in my PID.txt file does not match what is listed on the insiders page?

This product key is different than what was listed in my system before I did the upgrade and was different then what is list here. It would be interesting if windows update did the same thing. I think that might be fixed with the next build.

That key listed in the Pid did carry over to windows 10 though.


Belarc Advisor called my test version

Microsoft - Windows 8.1 Professional (x64) but it is 10 pro upgrade from windows 7 seven home.

Please bear with me - confusion reigns in my brain. I originally started a legitimate version of Windows 7 which was then legitimately upgraded to Windows 8, using the discount offer at that time. Then, of course, upgrade to Windows 8.1 was installed with no problem from Windows Store. That's where I am in terms of OS installations.

I, for what reason I don't know, joined the "Insider" Program, but never installed ANY of the Technical Previews....my pc is now showing update available for Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview 10074 TWICE as Recommended Updates, which I have hidden. The "Get Windows 10" icon is in my taskbar and says " Your pc has met requirements" and "Your Upgrade is reserved". (Screenshots attached) I am assuming I can upgrade to Windows 10 after July 29 with no problems. My concern is: a way to remove the duplicate upgrades being offered under Windows Update for 10074 and when I can opt out of the Insider Program. Can anyone help me straighten this out in my mind? Thanks!

Windows 10 Tech Preview is at present using Windows 8.1 keys, that may be why Belarc reported it as 8.1 Pro. My upgrade from 8.1 Core was via the Insiders page to 10074. After that it was Windows update to 10122 and then again to 10130. The new key it got with 10074 didn't change after that and stayed the same through 10122 and 10130. I have not done any upgrades with an ISO. I've only ever done clean installs with an ISO.

Build 10130 upgrades to pro from windows 7 home from iso
Build 10074 upgrades to home for windows 7 home from windows update.

I bet it's because of the PID.txt file on the ISO. That file would not normally be there. You could delete it and see what happens. It will either install Home or prompt for a key.

It would be interesting to find out what would happen in my scenario. Upgraded to 10130 usb then upgrade to the RTM then leave the program. I wonder if I would be forced to roll back. I am sure after last week fiasco they don't want to give out free pro versions that are upgraded from windows home version.

I should of mentioned. On the 10130 iso build, I chose not to do updates till after it was installed, don't know if that made a difference or not.

Normal Windows upgrade media would be keyed to a specific version. You wouldn't get a choice as to what version to install. It would have an ei.cfg file or something similar. When you upgraded, you'd be prompted to enter the key that came in the box with the CD/DVD. This preset upgrade VIA the Insiders page changes all that and is done different. It looks like they didn't figure you'd download the ISO and then upgrade with that. They figured you'd just be doing a clean install. It will be interesting to see how that works in the end when you got Pro and should have only got Home.
